Never heard of this but did some searching and quite a few sources note the program. Pretty sure it would work no better today.
I don’t think High schoolers working in fields for a summer job between school years is what anyone is considering as the ultimate solution in the present.
Also the situation isn’t exactly the same as with illegals as the program you mentioned as it started as an enacted agreement between the US and Mexico due to shortages during WII and then was extended based on a law passed by congress that set up the allowed parameters of the program until it ended. The ones coming as part of that agreement and law were not illegal at the time of entry.
It did still help create current illegal problem because it was the start of large programs based in law or just made up that are better at allowing in temporary or migrant workers than removing them after contracts over or allowed time is over.
quote:
By the time the Hart-Celler Act was implemented and the Bracero program was fully phased out, the vast majority of former braceros were left without legal means to work in the United States, so many continued to do so illegally. This led to a dramatic rise in illegal immigration after 1965, though the overall number of migrants entering the US remained about the same as during the Bracero program.
We kept allowing more in legally (and illegally) and not getting the other ones who were staying illegally out of our country. Multiple one time Amnesty programs were never going to be the fix as it just motivates more to enter illegally. We have continued doing this thru Biden’s presidency, and even the current attempts to rectify the situation are getting met by mobs of leftist insurgents and leftist activist judges who want to make removing illegals and enforcing federal law the actual crime.
Until we can make sure they leave one way or the other after time is up and also stop the others from entering illegally we shouldn’t start any new program like this.
The worst was Biden. Biden’s autopen allowed a ton of the shite stains of central and South American as well as Haiti to enter our country using the fraudulent amnesty plan promoted by Dems even as most of the criminals passed thru multiple other countries away from their home country before declaring amnesty at our border. They then blindly extended their stay with other temporary statuses after their original time ran out. They also ignored properly securing the border including actually destroying the wiring Texas was trying to do itself to avoid the unconstitutionally allowed invasion of illegals by Biden. Biden even flew in many of those frickers and fast tracked their temporary statuses. We improved other countries by taking their criminals and trash under Biden.

Yes. The argument even my grandparents, god love 'em, are going with is the instant classic, "But where will we get our cheap slave-wage labor, huh??"

I’m guessing it didn’t go well. White boys can’t hang with Mexicans.

Nope, currently employed but I’m sure there are plenty of able bodied people who need a job.

That was a good article, I wasn’t aware of that happening back then. Thanks for posting it.

If only there was some possible way to allow people to work here temporarily. Nah we have to open the borders and allow them to bring whole families and vote and get on public assistance.

I hauled hay for a few weeks with my country cousins when we were all high school athletes and I wouldn’t do that again or couldn’t if my life depended on it. We made 25-30 bucks a day cash.
We were all gym rats and all played college football with one of us becoming famous, and in great shape. I couldn’t keep up with them, and they couldn’t keep up with the field hands.

I was raised doing that kind of work and still do it today. I grow almost 2000 acres of rice and manage over 8000 acres of land. Also employ H2A migrant labor, as well as American labor. Fact of the matter is people in this country are lazy and are taught from an early age. That hard work is a bad thing. I have four boys and I promise you, they are taught otherwise.

High school boys in Sugartown (a small community in SW LA) do this annually.

I worked in agriculture from the time I was probably 7-8 years old. I did everything related to planting, harvesting, pruning, picking, spraying, etc. Very hard physical work. Of course it got progressively harder as I got older. My father in law also used to scrap sugar cane in the 1960s before he went to school and when he got home from school during harvest time. His friends did the same. Cry me a river about agricultural work, lol. It used to be commonplace. I’m sure kids 100 years ago had it rougher than all of us. A little hard work would not hurt the kids coming up. Nothing wrong with getting your hands dirty.
