Don't act like retail is the only menial job there is. They could clean houses and set their own schedule among many other things. Government worker, receptionist, etc etc etc.

I don't feel bad for the employees but I do think it's bullshite to be open on Thanksgiving. Some exceptions like pharmacies, etc of course.
eta: But then I guess the real problem is the customers that want to shop on Thanksgiving. We have a real illness in this country with our materialism and consumerism.

When I worked at the casino, people with kids got Thanksgiving and Christmas off. People without kids got New Years and Mardi Gras off.
Seemed to work out fine.
I've always offered to work the holiday shifts at jobs where they're open. I don't care about holidays generally.

More places should be closed on Thanksgiving and other major holidays IMO. Easy solution to the situation, but you won't see it bc the places that are open make money, and the workers can't afford to quit for a few hours with their families

Yep. It's not really the companies fault. Most companies are publicly traded and they need to make the shareholders money. The real problem is the masses who can't contain their lust for material items for just one fricking day.

Also drug dealers, people like to smoke up on holidays.
Either people want to eat and really enjoy their food, take the edge off around lots of family..or they'd just depressed..Etc.

Same thing happens at work for me. My girls will make $200+ in tips for that evening shift. The guys that work in the kitchen work because they would lose those hours otherwise and can't afford to. I try to work that shift with all volunteers and give them a little bonus cash for it too.

Working in a youth shelter for several years, I usually volunteered to work a Thanksgiving or Christmas shift since I didn't have kids. The pay was great but the work itself was incredibly enjoyable too.
That said, I'd probably be annoyed if I worked for a company for a few years where I had those holidays off and then they started opening on them. And it probably goes beyond workers to companies trying to force the general public to shop on those days if they're a lower to middle class family that depends on some of those deals to make it a good Christmas for their kids.

I work in retail and thanksgiving is usually very slow because most people are at home with their families. I don't mind working it because it's an easy day and they feed us. I also get off early enough to spend time with family. But I'm off for turkey day this year.
