A Waffle House waitress works just as hard if not harder than a Ruth’s Chris waitress but probably makes 10% as much.
It’s the knowledge.
A Ruth’s Chris waitress knows every wine on the menu. They can hear your tastes and suggest bottles based off of it. They know how each item on the menu is prepared, and they have special off menu secrets (like that everything can be done in half sizes) and they offer them.
When you want a box, they don’t just throw it at you. They box all your food and use foil to separate each item.
Etc.
Not saying WH waitresses don’t work hard, but Ruth’s is a different level of service.
That said, I see your point with elsewhere. Most other nice places, the waitress is no different than WH.

This is honestly why we tend to go to fast casual places more often than not.
We are the opposite. Lol. Fast casual is my least favorite.

15% of $12.93 is $1.93. Are we tipping based off the tax too?
This is the bullshite. Those quick tip add ons when paying with tablet do the tip based off the total with tax.
Hit the custom tip tab baw, problem solved.

This shite was worse during Covid, shitty coffee shop employees would ask how much would you like to leave for tip today? They wouldn’t let you touch the tablet because of a virus, I got a lot of pleasure out of telling them go to custom and put 0 please.

I can get my own drink for the machine or go to the bar and get a couple beers. Heck, i will even throw away my own trash and set my plates in a designated area just to pay a flat rate
The places I know like this still ask for a tip.
You stand in line. Get your own drink. Get your own silverware. Bus your table.
And these motherfrickers want a tip for bringing my food to me? Sure, but you ain't getting 15/20%.

I left without giving a tip. These workers are glorified busboys or busgirls, whatever. They don't actually wait on you. Plus, I was pretty offended that broken-English Hispanic girl essentially was demanding a tip for filling up Dr. Pepper a few times. I wonder how much she is really paid, or is she a slave?
Wow.

I never mind tipping
IF
There’s actually customer service and the employee actually seems to be moderately competent or motivated. However, that’s not even an expectation anymore. I still give them more than most deserve or work for.

The only place I over-tip is a coffee shop, because I tend to be in there for a while.

Use cash to avoid the iPad or keypad and you avoid the ask to tip.
I just paid cash at a breakfast joint. Bill was $13.74. The waitress literally only took my order and brought me my food. Never checked on me the whole time (I wanted more coffee and water), rushed by when I tried to get her attention, etc. She brought me the bill and said whenever your ready. No how was it, do you need anything else, type questions. I pay with a $20 bill. Then I got the first question of the experience. “Do you need change?”
I answered yes. She went to the register and returned with a 1 dollar bill and a 5 dollar bill. No coins. I guess she was wanted me to tip the whole 5 dollar bill. I just left the single. Feel like that might have been a dollar too much given the service quality.

I tip on friendliness more than job performance. If I see that you’re trying and you make me feel valued as a customer, I’ll tip you. I had a free car wash from getting my auto fluids changed on a day that it was raining. When I used it the next weekend, those guys made me feel like a VIP. I pulled up, stepped out the car, the young kid vacuumed my car and wiped down the dash, stubbed front, went through the wash, then two other dudes wiped my car down with pride in their work. I tipped them all because those guys are mostly halfway house types trying to repair their lives. I have a soft spot for that.
I enjoy tipping when I feel valued.

I, too, normally tip based on friendliness or courtesy.
But I like to leave a cash tip so the restaurant doesn't "pool" all the tips or the waiter doesn't get taxed on the tip. In fact, I like to put it in their hand if possible.
If I know the kid is a student, working their way through school I tip extra.

I tip based on service. If you didn’t do jack shite but what your job entails you get nothing. If you did good at your job I’ll tip you. I flex from 10-25%.

I've done both, and waiting tables for a local owned and popular Chinese buffet was much more work than a regular sit down restaurant.

Same here, I keep cash on hand for tipping individuals that I feel like deserve it.

All those folks who claim they would pay more money if workers made more per hour. Here's your chance to shine.

People are trying to change the rules to get more money.
Old rules: Alcohol and tax are excluded. 15% for good service, 10% for bad. Sit down restaurants and personal services only.
20% of the total was my standard. I recently changed back to the old rules with limited exceptions because it has gotten out of control.

I recently purchased some trail cams on line. At check out, the vendor asked for a tip. I think not.
