The power that pastors and the church have over elderly black women is sad

Especially women in the south. Was speaking with an elderly woman in her 70's today who is from Mississippi but spent her working years in Chicago. Now that she lives in MS again, she only gets to watch her precious Chicago Bulls games on television. As we talked, she mentioned that she would miss the Bulls game tomorrow vs golden state because she had choir rehearsal. I jokingly said that she's always at the church to which she replied that her pastor informed her and her other church members that "there are 168 hours in a week, and they need to be in church at least 60 of those 168 hours each and every week". What. The. frick. This woman has also said previously that when she was working, her employer scheduled a staff development training for 3 days at a local casino and resort. She asked her pastor permission to attend the staff development meeting. I was astounded. How can any human being allow another individual to have that much power and control over them?

Some people just need to belong to something. Or at least feel like they do.

Nobody is physically forcing her to go to church.

Shame on her for going because she wants to go to church. Maybe you should stop judging and be more open minded toward others who believe in something that is different from your own beliefs.

It's a bad sign, but not particularly horrifying examples. If he's not using that power to ruin her financially I might have no objection.

One thing about black churches I do find fascinating is how they hold their pastors in such elite regard. This would apply to all ages, and I'm sure it works for some non-black churches too. Treating clergy like royalty is just mind blowing to me (chill papists, I'm not going to bring you up).

It's sort of like how Alabama fans will never call Nick Saban "Nick" or "Saban", it's always "Coach Saban."

I bet he asks for a little less than a third of her money too.

i've been to many black churches which promoted pastors of various quality. i've met some legit great guys who are pastors who truly do give a shite about their congregation and do live "the word"

however, i will never understand the godlike status of these pastors to the groups

it's the same problem my brain has with unions

This is far from a black problem. About a decade ago, there was a Houston area Hispanic pastor (ex-con, cokehead) who convinced a congregation that he was the second coming of Christ. He convinced multiple families to gift him their entire estates. At the extreme, it's cult behavior (which is not exclusively, but often a white issue).
