All looked alike. It was some sort of sub culture there. Food was terrible at Cotton Logistics. I basically cooked food from HEB grocery almost every day.

It’s really not as bad as people say, just boring and not very pretty.

It's funny how they mentioned the great crew change.

You mean the one where 20 retirees were forced out and backfilled with 1 mid level and 3 new grads?

Talent left the industry largely because they had to, not because they wanted to.

There are a few tech companies with customer success roles like that, even with some actively recruiting. Not necessarily remote, but at least in an office.

100 years ago, this problem was solved with company towns.

The oil companies are making tons of money right now and it sounds like the worker issue isn't one of pay. Maybe they need to take some money and invest it in Midland, etc, to make those places more desierable for people to live and work.

The problem is companies don't want to make those long term investments. They just want to throw extra cash at people, because that's easy to reduce at the first sign of a slowdown. But clearly that isn't working.

My favorite view of Midland is looking out the airplane window on the flight back to Houston.

Midland is a tough sell…. That’s a hell of an understatement.

Worked there for a while. You dove hunt, quail hunt and deer hunt. If you have a soccer playing kid you drive to Dallas. You can get to the mountains pretty easily. I was glad I got transferred out though.

Midland is paradise compared to Pecos, there’s literally no grass there. Looks like Afghanistan

I was going to say, why is Midland so bad? It’s a fairly normal town. I drove 285 from Pecos to Carlsbad and now that area looks rough and you are 3 hours from Midland which is basically the first decent town around right?

They have done this to an extent. That is why midland is a lot nicer place to live in than odessa.

It’s a tough situation and I’m sure despite your internet posturing, you realize this.

With the current political climate and the cyclical nature of the industry, the companies make the wrong bet and end up wasting a ton of money. And I’ve read several stories about the local towns in Texas and N. Dakota where they built out extra school space and infrastructure, then things turned to shite in a downturn

That's pretty much what I figured. Back in the early 1990s, when I started hearing about Odessa-Permian, I think there were a lot of oil crash-related economic issues but I doubt that's true right now.

OT has its own little standards of what makes an area "nice." Lots of 10' ceilings and lawyer foyers, etc.

For me, it's more about what my own personal day-to-day would look like in an area.
