Not only did older workers retire, younger workers found other industries that would pay similar wages but without the travel.

Lawd, is this the truth. I work in industrial construction. 25 years ago, we paid $45/day per diem and workers would go because usually the out of town gigs offered tons of OT.

Now we are paying $150 / day, and increasing wages by $5-10 / hr just to get people to go. And they still refuse.

It is really difficult getting people during outage seasons. They just don't want to travel because they are content getting their 40 and going home.

It's not a bad way to counter inflation right now.

I've been doing oilfield/pipeline work since the 1980s and yes, the oilfield is full of crooked, trashy people. To a lesser extent the world is full of crooked, trashy people.

Midland is a tough sell…. That’s a hell of an understatement.

I left upstream because the PE group I was working with told me my next gig would be in Midland full time. Whole lot of nope.

I started working out of Midland not long ago. Just got back in from my 4th hitch. Midland itself has everything I need. I try to spend 95% of my time there getting paid or sleeping. I sure as hell wouldn't want to live out there, but it hasn't been terrible so far.

I make what I was making working derricks working from home.

And tuck my baby girl into bed every night.

How does that make you feel hand?

Midland is paradise compared to Pecos, there’s literally no grass there. Looks like Afghanistan

I felt that way about Mandeville when I was single there.

Anyway, I've heard terrible crap about this Midland-Odessa place for decades now. Would love to go spend 3-4 days there just to gape at the horror in slack-jawed amazement. There's no way my wife's going for that particular vacation idea, though. Still working on that Oklahoma Panhandle camping idea.
