It opened right before the final quarter of the year. Did anyone expect them to report a profit?

Sounds like a nice tax writeoff

Sure, when you lose money you get tax writeoffs…but you still lose the money, you know?

Something is way off, the “operator” may be not be making the money; but each event has to be near 10mln in revenues. $250 tickets, $19 beers, $40 bar drinks, $150 valet parking, $ food? Someone is making bank and someone doesn’t want to pay taxes…

Reports from @nypost reveal that expected revenues of around $117.3 million were expected in its first month, but the newly-minted arena brought in just $4.1 million.

Did they mention that valet parking is $150? Nobody wants to go near that place other than to just marvel at the outside of it

May have been their mistake. You can see the outside for free.

Should have made the exterior bland and only done the interior

It cost $2B to build and they thought they could make all of their money back on the construction in ~18 months? It seems like they have no idea about how actual business works.

What are you morons downvoting? What are you, pro bed bug?

It has been widely reported that Paris is in the throes of a hideous infestation (maybe the worst in the west) , and Vegas isn't far behind.

t will. You've got folks like Adele and Lady Gaga doing residencies out there. This will be the premier residency location going forward.

How much would it cost me to be able to just watch some YouTube in there? Can I cast directly from my phone to the massive LED screens?

Pretty sure this is a bullshite story. I think the $98.4MM loss is a quarterly figure. It opened on the 2nd to last day of the quarter so it had 92 days of expenses and 2 days of revenue.

ETA Dolan is already building another in London.

I understand the marketing aspect isn't going as well as projected but it seems like it would be easy to have an event going on in there every night.

Nearly every big musical act rolls through Vegas.

It almost has to be a residency. It's not a venue where a touring band can throw up their stage and speaker stacks. It takes some preparation to integrate that screen. The U2 show was spectacular in that regard. I was there last week.

If Prince or Michael Jackson were alive it would be perfect for them. I could see Metallica. I could see Kiss. I could see Daft Punk reuniting and blowing people's minds. Beyonce. Rhianna. Either way I think it has to be a run/residency of shows to make it worth it for the artist and the sphere.

U2 was the safest, most perfect opening act. They know how to do big shows, and they have a built in audience that has plenty of discretionary spending. They sold out every show they planned and then extended into Jan/Feb.

As cringe as he is (to me) I think Garth would kill it there for months in a row.

Taylor swift is too big for the Sphere...which has arena-esque capacity.

Sorry to interrupt the circle jerk, but those losses don’t mean jack in the grand scheme of things. The month they reported included 2 shows, not to mention the entire run is completely sold out. That thing is printing money and I hear they have another very high profile artist that will follow U2.

I caught the U2 show and the place is an incredible venue. It’s a fantastic experience and a true spectacle. It’s hard to explain how immersive it is CC and pics/videos don’t capture it. I’m not a big U2 fan, but the show was great too.

Rumor is Phish and Rolling Stones are next. It takes months of work to produce and program the content for the screen.

Huge. Glad I caught U2. Bono's not the same at 60+ as he was at 30. But it was still a good show. I hate I missed the OG Zoo TV tour.

Here's the thing about the sphere...there's always tons of visitors in Vegas. Even if I'm not a huge Phish or Stones fan...if I have a chance to go see them if I happen to be there, would I go? You're damn right I would.
