The new Belle Chasse bridge has an unexpected sinking problem, and the state Department of Transportation and Development has hit the bridge's developer with $10,000-per-day fines.

But what does that mean for Plaquemines Parish drivers? Just how safe is the new bridge? Here's what to know.

This summer, the bridge's developer, Plenary Infrastructure Belle Chasse, discovered higher-than-expected sinking at the bridge's approaches, the slabs upon which drivers transition from road to bridge, a spokesperson for the developer, Plenary Infrastructure Belle Chasse, said this week. DOTD officials hit the developer with the fines because of that issue, DOTD Secretary Joe Donahue has said.

One would think that with every project in La having dozens of studies and re-studies over decades before acting, this type of thing wouldn't happen.

The DOTD does all of the preliminary field studies, draws up the plans, forces the suppliers to make all their products to the DOTD’s specs, forces and inspects that the GC build the project exactly to the State’s specs and then when something goes awry blames and back-charges the GC.

The GCs of the World will be lined up around the building to bid on more State work here.

In a completely unrelated story, the developer has filed for contract extensions which will cost $15,000 per day. DOTD spokesperson described this as a "win-win".

Sounds appropriate for a project in Plaquemines Parish.

The studies involve people scrolling instagram and TikTok while they should be working on the study.

My understanding is the bridge itself isn't sinking, just the on ramps.

But yes, obviously a colossal failure

The traffic down there is an epic level cluster frick with this work and with all of the workers building the LNG plant south of there.

shits expensive and we hire the cheapest people. Also, our road infrastructure is growing faster than our infrastructure budget. We are behind now and the backlog of repairs is growing.

Probably should take a page out of China’s development book and see how they built an actual island from nothing to support the world’s largest airport.

At first, it was sinking too and they made it work. So if China can create an island from nothing in the ocean and then keep the entire thing from sinking, we can manage to keep a bridge from sinking

The studies are a way to pass dollars to friends and donors. Not to actually discover anything.

I mean, if you have zero clue how projects like this get built, why even post?

Should have expanded the tunnel; it would have been completed already.

Why are the sides painted orange and yellow? I’d assume it’s for boat/barge traffic but just wondering.

Are you talking about the airport in Hong Kong? or Kansai in Japan? The airport in Hong Kong was built by the british. The japanesse are spending billions to fix their aiport sinking issues. I some how ended up way to may shows taking about how they built both of these. The infrastructure for Hong Kong airport was insane.

Neither is close to the world's largest.

The project is literally in a quagmire.

quagmire
noun
1. Land with a soft muddy surface.
2. A difficult or precarious situation; a predicament
