quote:Ants, wasp, and bees are all of the same family, though I think ants broke off on their own evolutionary path during the time of the dinosaurs.
What's the difference between an ant and a flightless wasp? I've heard about flightless wasps before, but I always thought that's just what ants are.
But I’m no entomologist.

Fun fact: Ants make up about a 1/5th of the Earth’s total biomass.

Nothing like a wasp sting on your ear to make life flash before your eyes

Mutillidae (Wikipedia)
Mutillidae
Velvet Ant (Mutillidae), Dasymutilla, Albuquerque.JPG
Dasymutilla sp.
Scientific classification e
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Hymenoptera
Superfamily: Pompiloidea
Family: Mutillidae (Wikipedia)
The Mutillidae are a family of more than 3,000 species of wasps whose wingless females resemble large, hairy ants. Their common name velvet ant refers to their dense pile of hair, which most often is bright scarlet or orange, but may also be black, white, silver, or gold.
Me
They are flightless wasps and not ants. That's what I said earlier. Both insects but two different families. So they are not scientifically ants. I wondered about this about six months ago and being a curious type, I looked it up in reference materials (Wikipedia). The moral of this story I guess is if you screw with them they sting you like a wasp and not an ant. But I've never been stung by one and really don't know.

What about an Asp?
I covered this. This in reference materials is the puss caterpillar but is also called the asp caterpillar and I've read they pack a wallop.

Did you know that Red Velvet ants are actually a wingless wasp?
These European Hornets scare me more than anything else in TN:

Ever see what the damage is to the bite area?

This a-hole has a painful sting.

My dad got bitten on the foot by a BR after being in the crawl space of our house.
The tissue around the bite died and there was talk of amputating his leg from the calf down.
He finally got past the necrosis, but would occasionally get sick from the toxins for years after the bite.

I'm talking about those red and black 1/2 long fuzzy oversized ant looking things. I'm over 60 and it's only this year that I know they are WINGLESS wasps. They are not ants. Thank god for entomologists and wikipedia else I'd still think they were big ants.

For the longest time I thought his name was “Cody Peterson” and he just had an Australian accent (I wouldn’t watch the whole video just him being stung)

I picked one up at the house one day as a kid. I don't remember excruciating pain, but I have always remembered never to do it again.
