The lightning bugs are back

They've been back in Missouri most of the spring and summer.

The only redeeming quality of driving through Illinois is a stretch of highway that they’ve allowed native plants grow which brings in millions of lightning bugs. It’s pretty damn sweet at night.

One flew into my windshield the other night. I reprimanded my driver for not practicing evasive maneuvers. Protect our friends.

Be careful they have females mimicking females of another species.... and it's no bueno.

We get them around my house in early summer every year. Usually they are gone by this time of year but still remain. Maybe they are liking all the unusual rain we have been having? Location: Shreveport.

Fire ants seem way down this year, IDK why (maybe the late freeze?), but it has coincided with a lightning bug revival. Got them all over my property this year in CenTex. I suspect fire ants kill them like almost everything else that is ground-dwelling.

What's your location? I noticed a Shreveport friend commenting about how they had not seen lightning bugs in a long time and they now have them back.
In central Texas I have had them in my backyard for the past 5 or so summers. I had them again earlier this spring but do not have any right now. I wonder is something happened to push them East and that's why Louisiana friends are seeing them this year.
The past few summers friends from La have visited me and were amazed to see lightning bugs again.

When I was a kid growing up near Galveston Bay we didn't have fireflies here. We had these tropical bioluminescent click beetles that we called lightning bugs. Don't really see them around here on summer nights anymore.

That used to be the way it was everywhere in east/SE U.S.. You can read old accounts of it. People said you could barely ride your horse at night because they were everywhere and would blind you.
