Pretty crazy that the Fall of Constantinople and Columbus reaching the New World were only 40 years apart.

It wasn’t coincidence that the latter followed the former. The loss of Constantinople was huge in cutting off land trade with the east.

That's because the Orthodox are still being punished for leaving the Roman Catholic Church.

The eastern church broke from the Chair of St. Peter and were slowly gobbled up by the religion of Islam as punishment. Of the five original patriarchs (Rome, Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch, and Jerusalem), only Rome remained unoccupied and unconquered by Islam.

The Seljuk Turks were a rough bunch. Essentially they were mercenaries for other Islamic regimes because Turks are originally from Afghanistan ....North actually. Byzantine contact with them was something of an accident. They were moving south towards Damascus because of a beef with the ruler there. The Byzantines saw a large army passing through its frontier and reacted with a non unified army led by the emperor that the Seljuks defeated. They took the emperor hostage and then let him go back to Constantinople with like 10 people. Then the Seljuks began to invade Asia Minor. To cement themselves the sultan ordered the rape of as many women there as possible and then ultimately a seige of Constantinople.

About 250 years later the Ottomans popped up. They at first were allies of the Byzantine emperor and there was lots of inter marriage. Mehmet for instance was probably more Serb than Turk. His right hand, the Pasha Zagros, I believe, was actually a converted Greek.
