The Ford Panther body should be included in the pantheon of great American cars

Dependable, simple, built like tanks, large, comfortable, V8 powered, and rear wheel drive. Served Americans in their lives for decades as family cars, police cruisers, taxis, and limos. The last true American full size car.
Dusenbergs, muscle cars, etc. have their place but none of them were as important to American daily lives as the Panthers.
If you were to do a cross county drive, demolition derby, first teen car, or just about anything else these models would be a good choice even today.

Out of curiosity, how many other Ford chassis codes can you name offhand? I would guess it is one at most. That one being a furry, omnivorous mammal.

Yes it is. The last 3 panther bodies I have owned, two TCs and a MGM, I changed out the suspension to bilsteins with rebuild including moog front end parts.
Best driving vehicles one can own. They simply went where you pointed it. No sway whatsoever!!

The Crown Vic was kept around so long because the second gen Taurus was a huge disappointment. The first gen Taurus was a major game changer, but by the mid 1990s…. Ford was too busy with SUVs to invest in an upsized Taurus that would be roomy and sturdy enough for taxi and police duty. So they took the first gen and made it hideous…and called it a day while keeping the Crown Vic in production.
Another similar story: current gen Dodge Durango is the most un-Dodge Dodge that’s for sale now. Because it’s actually pretty reliable. Because the damn thing hasn’t really changed in 17 years. Not particularly competitive. But it’s the only game in town if you want a sturdy mid sized V8 SUV.
Chevy Express is similar. Bulletproof. Big V8. Simple. Same basic vehicle since the mid 1990s. Different story on the competitive front because it’s in a segment that’s obsessed with costs and upfitter compatibility and that tends to reward designs that never change.
