I don't know. What does the employee's living expenses have to do with the value they provide to the company?

Those salaries are based on the local market and COL.
I wouldn't say that salaries are "based on" CoL so much as CoL is factored into the calculus as to whether an employee will take the job.

I mean a company can do what they want, but I think it's kind of a dick move and I believe they will find that the talent will go elsewhere. If lots of remote devs move to cheaper CoL areas, that should put a natural downward pressure on salaries. I think that forcing the issue by making employees self-report will turn out to be counter-productive.

It’s already being done for the most back office and mundane jobs

Yeah that's been happening for a long time. Effective communication is valuable to some companies, to others not so much.

Meh, some will go this route, others who care about quality and data safety won’t.

My company’will tell you with the quickness, We’re not paying you to work. We’re paying you to work HERE.

I think it’s foolish, but they sign the front of my check so...

The real darkside of work from home:

If you can do your job from home, Rajesh in Bangalore can do your job.

People talk about Teams Meetings and how great they are. They are great for internal meetings, short ones. For in depth meetings, meetings with clients, nothing will ever replace or come close to face to face.

Could be short sided but Rajesh I have seen can work off a script only

Really anything we outsource could be RPA- bc only as good as script you give them

This needs to be widespread corporate policy yesterday.

I’m tired of the massive influx of New Yorkers buying up property down here in Charleston in recent months because “it’s just so cheap.”

Just because you make $100,000 as a data entry clerk in NYC doesn’t mean you carry the same value down here.

From what I've seen with my wife's transition to WFH, the pay negotiation is basically negligible.

What's driving her crazy is the expectation that she is always available, especially since so many of the people she works with live on the West Coast. She is essentially expected to be tethered to her laptop from 8am-8pm. Her position in the company is bleeding employees because of it, but this increasingly seems to be the norm.

She talked to a recruiter today about work/life balance with another company and was told "Yeah, it's an issue, but if you log off at 7pm, no one will be upset."

I've been assured by technocrats and politicians that we can retrain truck drivers to write code and this will usher in a wave of new tech jobs across the Rust Belt and Appalachia.

A nurse in NYC is going to make considerably more than a nurse in some podunk town in Arkansas. How is this any different?

People are paid based on the market/cost of living in their region in I'm sure every profession, this is nothing new.

I agree, your paid based on the value you bring to the company. Lowering your salary because of where you live if they allow you to work remotely is ridiculous.
