Most of the people car jacked while pumping gas could have minimized their risk by turning off the car before getting out. And the one on video at Costco could have taken an extra step by making sure the driver side door opens up into the tank; thereby, reducing the opportunity for the guy to easily jump out of his car and into hers

When these are the precautions one has to consider when pumping gas at a heavily trafficked intersection, in a gated "members only" station, with obvious cameras, during the middle of the day? Guess what? It is indeed "that bad."

People walking in San Francidco can mitigate against stepping in human feces by wearing plastic bags over their shoes. Might keep their shoes clean, but doesnt mean that the likelihood of human shite isnt fricking disgusting.

Is it really that unsafe?

It actually is this time. Knew some people putting together a bachelorette party and they were telling people that if they felt uncomfortable with the crime that it was understandable if they didn't want to come

I am perception skeptic and have always been in love with my home town of New Orleans.

While still love it, the crime is rampant, brazen and seemingly can hit anyone anytime. When my Marigny sphere decides to pack up and leave because they say it is out of control, the canary in the New Orleans safety cave has keeled over.

I’m on a “time out” from New Orleans for a while.

This is hard in NOLA. If you want to get out of uptown, what are your options?

I've lived in other larger cities and the quiet neighborhoods had interstate access and street routes out of town that didn't require going through rough areas.

Far from fine, far from a warzone.

Everyone has their own personal risk tolerance, whether it comes to crime or covid.

I am out and about pretty often. I have been hitting up parades and I go for long walks around uptown every night. I feel fine but I am also aware of my surroundings and try to avoid being a target (don’t stare at phone, make eye contact, looking around when parking/turning off car).

Are the "better parts" of New Orleans - the Garden District, Uptown, Carrollton, Broadmoor, CBD/Warehouse District Lakeview, Mid-City unsafe or is it business as usual?

Those are the better parts?

However, no you will not be a victim if you take steps to minimize your risk. Target hardening vehicles such as locking your doors at ALL times, removing valuables from visibility, and staying out of high crime areas will help.

Some of the recent carjackings don’t fit this narrative at all. Many happened in the middle of the day in “non high crime areas”.

It depends on your tolerance level. If you don’t mind city leaders being completely lost and incompetent, and also seeing kids in neighborhoods with guns pulling on door handles, and brazen shootouts on streets, then Nola might be just fine for you.

But, your line of reasoning that unoccupied cars getting damaged is ostensibly not that bad, would make you fit in just right with all the white liberals in this city who can’t wait to make excuses for the perps.

It’s sickening.

Is it as ridiculously bad as some on here say it is? No. Is it worse than just about any other place in the country? Yes. If crime was the only thing wrong with NO, it might be tolerable as long as you stay WAY uptown or in Lakeview. Combining crime with the rest of the negatives - no way.

The key is - there is ZERO hope for any improvement in the foreseeable future. It’s just gonna get worse under the people in charge and the people likely to be voted in by the remaining voters.

It’s every bit as bad as people say.

The crime used to not crossover. Now nothing is off limits.

The police force is decimated & the criminals know it. With each passing successful crime, they are only getting more brazen.

I do believe it is worse now. I have many friends who are scared to do normal errands around town, and it has altered my own family plans for Mardi Gras. I've been avoiding the city in general thanks to the mandates, but the crime makes it easy to stay away.

I see a post several times a week from friends, addressing the crime - so they live there, are seeing it, and very upset over it.

If you listen to the hyperbole, you’d think anyone who walks down any street at any time in any place is going to get gunned down. This is simply not true. Now, is the crime horrendous and getting worse? Absolutely. I’m very glad I no longer live in the middle of it and I was in the “safe” area of Lakeview. I frankly don’t think it will be that long before tourists start looking elsewhere for fun if they haven’t already. That said, even Mogadishu isn’t as bad as some would have us believe NO is right now.

This is way too much. When you start talking about the above, there is zero argument you don’t live in a 3rd world war zone

You ever gonna come back to this thread?

Yeah I 100% agree. The police, mayor, DA, etc have emboldened them and there are just gangs of teenagers now that know there are NO consquences.

It is not good at all right now.

I’ve been going to saints games/ French quarter for over 20 years, never had my car broken into.

One of the last games I went to and parked in a good area of the French quarter in a paid parking lot and still had my window shattered and broken in. Had to pay $40 parking for the pleasure of spending more money to get my car fixed.

A friend of mine went to the tool concert and said he saw shattered windows everywhere on his walk back to his vehicle. It’s never been this bad before.

Police need to start setting up bait cars in these areas for events and catch these thugs.
