Read this whole thing and I'm still confused. Doesn't look like anything is set in stone but every possibility has been speculated as a new reality in the near future.

Well in terms of wireless, there is a finite supply. Depending on how many people are in an area and how much data is being pushed through the tower.

Would that theoretical limit ever be reached though? Probably not.

You mean they will offer their loyal payibg customers better benefits than customers who just stop in for a second?

fricking unbelievable.

Errr, this just wrong. The better way to say this is....

So google gives you all kinds of free shite so they can sell "you"(their product) for a profit = GOOD.

ATT wants you to buy their internet, content and stop you from buying their competitors product = bad

The issue with net neutrality is not about stopping ISPs from offering their products, its the ISP using its service as a carrier to stop you from buying a competitors product, or making a competitor product prohibitively expensive.

But until we have a government that truly supports the free market (probably never), then we need net neutrality. Still, I find that NN is basically a bad idea that the government needs to enforce to make up for their own anti-free market regulations.

Oh Lord

The companies supplying the product were the ones violating the basic assumptions of a free market long before the government came into play. Do you even know what the basic assumptions are and what they mean? Do you know why the market for wheat or produce is the closest we have ever come to a "free market"?.

Look at the history of AT&T. The government isn't always perfect but if anyone is to put all or most of the blame on gov..... Then you don't understand the economics and haven't followed the history.

frick.. Just look up the history of anti-trust law. Maybe then you'll have a better understanding of what's going on.

But you are phrasing it wrong.

Its not ability to watch it for free.

It's ability to not have it count against mobile data if you have an HBO subscription and an att mobile subscription.

Similarly, it doesn't charge me any more to watch it with my provider, but it just counts towards the 5/10 GB to which I paid for on my phone. You know, like how the entire wireless Internet access is supposed to work and is what was expected when you bought the plan?

IDK, I guess I don't regard it as the impending death of net neutrality when we are talking HD streams of mobile video. I don't NEED that off the cuff wherever I go. Too many sources of wifi for that, and if it matters I can load it onto the phone itself.

Like I said, if we were talking WIRED connections that would be something I would feel is against net neutrality.

Why do people think this is significantly different from T mobile offering Netflix for "free?"

I don't understand how anyone can look at a scheme to make the internet like cable television (being able to access only site within your plan) and say there's nothing wrong with it.

This site would never exist if the internet was the way the big ISPs want it to be.

To all the trump supporters out there, this style of internet basically gives ISPs total control of what content you see. How would you like it if HuffPo was the only non-alphabet new source you could access?

shite, people complain about the "liberal media" now. Just think what it will be like when there are literally no other voices because every ISP has blocked their content.

I'm all about free markets and government staying out as much as possible, but this would be such a cataclysmic blow to the exchange of ideas if we allow ISPs complete and total control of what people see on the internet. Which is exactly where they WANT to go on this.

As with many things in our changing society, and as evidenced in this thread, the vast majority of people will brush this off, say it's "not that bad" or "better than the alternative" and then in 10 or 15 years everyone will look around and wonder "How the frick did this happen?"

All of this. Do people not get the end game here?

The end game is complete control of content, which can be both for political and profit motives. And neither are a good thing for private business to control in the free exchange of ideas.

This starts with "movies," Yeah who cares. It ends with a private company being able to limit what you have access to on their decision. TigerDroppings to conservative? It counts against your cap. Democratic Underground doesn't. Netflix on AT&T works fine, but it doesn't on the other networks.

The independence of being able to start a website, a business, a process, would be totally hamstrung by private companies making whatever decision they want.

None of this is a good thing, the internet would be effectively over.

b/c I have no data cap on my 100Mb/s internet use through Cox, so why would I give a shite?

You shouldn't. This is all a bunch of fuss about nothing IMO.

ATT is saying you can have a 40 GB plan. Once you hit 40 GBs, you have to pay for any data usage with overage charges. If you use DirecTV NOW, it won't count against your data though.

The people in this thread want ATT to charge you for all data over 40 GB, and they believe to let you use DirecTV NOW without charging you is anti-consumer.

Exactly. I really don't give a frick because I have ATT and DirectTV Now. People that get all pissy about Net Neutrality is funny imho. Verizon has exclusive access to NFL games. ATT did all of us a favor. Sling and Vue was shitty. Competition will only make streaming television better over time.

Do you live in Venezuela? Cause in America it's still legal to start a company, offer internet access and take AT&T's customers.

That's the goal of every fricking corporation on the globe.

Just b/c they want me to only use their product doesn't mean I have to, or will.

it's internet, not electricity. There's a choice. I hate AT&T. I will never use anything associated with them ever again.

Yes, you do. It's a minimum of 1 TB, though.

Don't take my word for it. Take Cox's.

I called and asked Cox. Talked to 3 different people. All said there is no cap. I asked each of them what I was using just so i'd know. None of them were capable of even finding that information.

Yet it took me approximately five seconds to type "cox data cap" into Google and click on literally the first link to find it on Cox's own website.

Cox's customer service isn't usually known for hiring the brightest tool in the drawer.

EDIT: In all fairness, while Cox does have a data cap, they currently only send you a "hey, you went over your data cap" email unless you live in Ohio, Florida, or Georgia (according to that link), where they charge for data use over the cap. I have gotten that email from them before. How long do you think they're going to wait to share that new billing scheme with the rest of us, though?

RE-EDIT: Also, on that same page, there's this line: "Content managed by Cox included in Cox-provided services do not count toward data usage." For some reason, that sentence seems like something I read about recently. Can't put my finger on where, though.

and yet I still don't give a shite b/c I will never use AT&T and I have no data cap on the internet I currently have, which is 100 times better than AT&T's shitty internet.

I would bet I am in the upper echelon of data users in my area, with a wife that uses the wifi all afternoon, me using it all day on here and work, while i stream the news or ESPN on my Roku in the background, and have 2 or 3 streams of Vue or Netflix for a few hours every afternoon, and the occasional time I let my kids watch those dumb arse youtube videos of other kids playing with toys.
Throw in 6 straight hours of redzone every sunday, streaming ESPN all day Saturday, i'm pretty sure I use a good bit of data, yet I haven't gotten that email before.

They lied to you then. I've got Cox...

quote:

Cox High Speed Internet packages include 1 TB (1,024 GB) of data to provide you with plenty of freedom to stream, surf, download, and share. Approximately 99% of Cox customers are currently on a data plan that more than adequately meets their monthly household needs.

quote:

If you exceed your data plan, your service is not interrupted except in the rare cases of excessive usage. In those extremely rare situations, Cox may suspend service after attempting to resolve the issue. See the Cox Online Privacy Policy and related terms and agreements for additional information.

I was just looking at the data usage meter on their website and apparently I've gone over the 1 TB twice and usually use 850 GB on a monthly basis.
