Perique Tobacco grown & aged in St James Parish

A quality tobacco in expensive pipe tobacco mixtures almost went extinct. I was unable to buy any locally for a couple years. No one has been able to grow it anywhere but the St. James area of LA.

Wikipedia
quote:

When the Acadians made their way into this region in 1776, the Choctaw and Chickasaw tribes were cultivating a variety of tobacco with a distinctive flavor. A farmer named Pierre Chenet is credited with first turning this local tobacco into what is now known as Perique in 1824 through the labor-intensive technique of pressure-fermentation. The Tobacco Institute says perique has been shipped out of New Orleans for more than 250 years and is considered to be one of America's first export crops.

Looks like Perique is making a comeback. Anyone on here familiar with it?

WGNO
quote:

"It's cherished around the world and we almost lost it."

quote:

"I went down a couple of blocks to get some po-boys for my employees," recalls Ryan. "They had no idea what perique was. Same year, I was in Germany. I was in a meeting. And I mentioned perique. Six guys that didn't even speak English pointed at me and said, 'St. James Parish.'"

Perique tobacco is tobacco grown in St. James Parish, packed into whiskey barrels, placed under pressure, and then left to ferment in its own juices for 12-18 months. The result is a tobacco that, when blended with other types of tobacco, has a distinct flavor appreciated by smokers around the world, particularly pipe smokers.

Sounds like a marketing issue.

Probably a big part of it.

The stuff lasts for 50+ years, if it's stored properly. There was a slowdown in smoking worldwide. I think wholesalers were overstocked with it for some years, Then everyone ran out of it and there was kind of a panic.

People who smoke pipes know all about Perique. It's usually mixed with Virginias and called VaPer for short. Some people say it has a slight peppery taste to it.

I have a few different VaPers cellared away. It's not my favorite tobacco but it has a light, mild taste.

Unfortunately the deeming regulations fricked over a bunch of small and medium size tobacco blending companies and put them out of business. Want to get angry at government overreach? Google tobacco deeming regulations.

Distiller Ted Breaux also makes a nice liqueur with it.

My sister did the ancestry DNA test from ancestry.com a few months back. It said that Pierre Chenet is one of our fifth generation grandfathers.

Definite overreach. Agree completely.

Was hoping to find someone who knows of a direct supplier in St James Parish who the tobacco shop I deal with could order from directly.

All of the tobacco grown there is sold to either Mark Ryan or the Martin’s. There aren’t any independents any more. Ryan owns the Daughters & Ryan tobacco company that makes all sorts of blends and products from it. All of the Martin inventory is sold to American Spirit for their cigarettes.

My family grew it for years. There just isn't as much of a market as there used to be. My great uncles ran the farm for the most part and they haven't planted in a couple of years. However, I reckon it's got more to do with the work involved rather than the market demand.

I used to get my perique from bayou tobacco. It’s a dark, Rich, earthy smoke.

True dat. this isn't some mystery tobacco. It's a condiment tobacco used to spice up a blend. It is fermented with a really strong taste and high nicotine content, you don't need much.

Latakia is another one of those specialty tobaccos, but it is smoked over camel dung.

The problems with perique are:

1. Expensive only one farm grows it in St. James, some years no production due to weather or business.

2. How many pipe smokers do you see out there IRL? Even on Mad Men out of the whole office and cast of character who smoked only one smoked a pipe.

3. The pipe tobacco companies needed a consistent inexpensive source of perique and developed fake perique using kentucky tobacco. It's like when Pepsi and Coke switched to cheaper HFCS from sugar, sure sugar is better but 99% of the plebes out there can't taste the difference.

The real perique smells like fig preservatives and packs a wallop. I've smoked them both pure and there is a big difference.

In a typical blend where perique only makes up 5% of the blend it's hard to tell much of a difference.

Dunhill Nightcap used to be a fave. Now the issue is pipe tobacco companies are calling the fake perique "perique" so you never know if you're getting the real stuff or the Kentucky stuff.

Perique Is legit. They are also growing it off of the side of a mountain in Brazil with hopes to use it in a cigar eventually.

A friend of ours grows it and sells to a cigar manufacturer.

The Cigars are great made by Tabacalera and are called 1881 Perique. These are my personal favorite Cigars by far. They have a Maduro and a Bold. I want to say the Maduro has around 16% Perique and the Bold has 36% Perique and the rest is blends of Philippine Tobacco. I prefer the Maduro overall.

Perique Tobacco is far from the best. It's used to "cut" better more expensive tobaccos.
