I grew up in that area. It has always been known that no one smokes perique alone because it's too harsh. It is alway blended with other tobaccos as a filler
No. Not as a filler. Fillers are cheap tobaccos. Perique is extremely expensive.

I avoided that cigar precisely because of the Phillipine tobacco. LOL

Is it true, as I have heard it said, that the growing area in St. James Parish is quite limited and beyond that it will not grow?

There was a cigar shop in the last decade, before Katrina, now gone, that had a house blend cigar made with Perique as well.

Picayune Cigarettes were made from Perique tobacco. Those little, non-filtered, smokes were some hard nails, buddy!

Was hoping to find someone who knows of a direct supplier in St James Parish who the tobacco shop I deal with could order from directly.

In Carl Weber's book on pipes and tobacco, he says, "Parique tobacco ranks as something special among tobacco plants. For some unknown reason, it grows only on a small triangle of land some fifty miles west of the city of New Orleans. All attempts to grow Perique seeds on other soils have failed" (Weber's Guide to Pipes and Pipe Smoking, 1962)

My sister did the ancestry DNA test from ancestry.com a few months back. It said that Pierre Chenet is one of our fifth generation grandfathers.
You probably already know this, but in Carl Weber's book on pipes he says,
quote:

"As the popularity of the new tobacco spread, it became known as "tabac de Parique", since Perique was Pierre's nickname."

Seems like there isn't a huge market and the tobacco is just really difficult to grow anywhere. These farmers just have the patience and experience.

Grand Point Louisiana is the area where the best Perique is grown. I grew up near that area.

Only because of the labor intensive process involved and the small supply, not because of the quality.

This is exactly what I was asking my friend who's uncle was a Perique grower that I mentioned in my earlier post. I asked him this question about the special soil and strain of tobacco many years ago. The limited geography where this stuff could grow intrigued me.
He just chuckled and said it was mostly folklore or mystique for marketing and that the processing was the real key to the flavor.
I don't know if he was telling me the truth or not, but that was his answer.

Doesn't Drew Estate use tobacco from here? Some big name does and I'm too lazy to look it up right now

I don’t know if Jonathon uses it yet, but I know it’s in the works. He did a tasting not too long ago where some samples were handed out.

Edit: someone posted a link to the tasting.

He was right, it’s not the location. The seed can and has been grown elsewhere.

Marketing makes many people rich, though!

I have Frog on the Bayou, Frog one Log and Frog Morton Cellar among some other McClelland tobaccos cellared. Nightcap is good also and it's a shame both McClelland and Dunhill bit the dust.

However there are some really good tobaccos still out there being produced including some being blended by The Country Squire in Jackson, MS.

Pretty cool.

I recently graduated from cigar smoking to pipe smoking although I stick to aromatics like a newb such as Lane 1Q for now.

Good stuff. Ordered a couple bottles and an Italian absinthe a few years back. With the shipping cost you may as well grab at least a few bottles if buying from there.

1Q is a solid aromatic especially to start with. A good starter English would be Peter Stokkebye English Luxury. it is mild and can be ordered bulk for less than $3 am ounce.
