And people will buy this hook, line and sinker.

They've preyed on people's faiths and beliefs for all this time and they will continue to do so for all eternity.

find this absolutely repulsive, why in the hell should schools and parishioners today be on the hook and asked to pay for what these sickos did long ago? Let the archdiocese sell some of the property they’re sitting on to pay off their debts.

I tend to lean this way though always have the lingering “how many people looked the other way” that nags when it’s such a fully formed crisis of the community like this, and not an isolated instance that most would have no idea about outside the institution.

That said, the churches approach continues to be gross.

Exactly the point I was trying to bring up. The Sickness of Evil runs deep like a cancer.

Can the parishes/schools remove themselves from the archdiocese?

So the victim has to pay their own settlement? Makes sense.

"Father, I diddled a couple of altar boys."
"Well, as long as you're sorry. Say two Hail Marys, have a glass of communion wine, and get back in the game!"

Coming to say the same thing. Fricking $$$ in art, gold, statuary, reliquaries etc across Europe but in the hands of “THE ONE TRUE CHURCH” likely could pay this off 10 fold. frick ‘‘em and I was raised Catholic, was an altar boy and went to their schools (not touched)

The letter said when the bankruptcy was filed there were 30 abuse claims, now there are more than 500.

Either there is fraud, or my goodness the abuse was far worse than we imagined.

I’d guess the truth is somewhere in between. That’s how it usually is in a situation like this.

On the other hand, those abuse cases happened somewhere. I don’t claim to know the exact makeup of the cases but surely a lot of them (I would think most) happened at.. well.. schools and individual parishes. So while it may not be fair that parents and parishioners ultimately get stuck with those costs, is it really unfair that the actual schools and parishes have to pay them?

If that’s your line of thinking, then we as a nation owe reparations, too.

I get what you’re saying, but it’s still shitty for those parishes that aren’t flush with cash.

The fact that ppl still attend Catholic Churches after all that’s come out is the most mind boggling thing in our modern society.

This has been a struggle for me, as a lifelong Catholic. There have not been many cases in our Diocese (to my knowledge), so I think we’re not as corrupt as New Orleans, but I am continuously disgusted by how this is being handled in places like New Orleans and Boston, and I can only assume that’s coming from further up the chain, which makes me thing if it were to happen in my parish, the response would be identical.

Unfortunately they can do just about whatever they want. Where else can you send kids to school safely?
The NOLA Catholic school system has been dealing with dwindling enrollment for a while now. A few schools have already closed in recent years due to low enrollment numbers and many more are struggling to boost their numbers. If they try to jack up tuition to pay for decades old priest abuse claims, you’re just going to see more kids getting pulled from Catholic schools and put into a magnet school or moving somewhere with better public schools.

I guess then the archdiocese can sell the real estate for the schools that close

The Catholic church getting petty over money to this extent is hilarious to me.

Already started. Closed St Rita school (on Fontainebleau Dr), moved the archdiocese employees from Howard Ave building to Fountainbleau, and sold the Howard Ave building to a AirBnB developer.
