I’m not religious but I’m sure there’s other options.

As for communion…I hate to break it to you, but eating a wafer won’t get you to heaven.

The Archbishop’s latest letter from yesterday.

quote:

“At the appropriate time, the parishes and Archdiocesan ministerial agencies will be asked to contribute in order to seek a channeling injunction. While this means a financial contribution will be required of the group legally referred to in the Chapter 11 as Apostolates, it is, in fact, a legal means to protect and preserve the assets of the parishes, their elementary schools, and the agencies into the future, by “channeling” claims of abuse that occurred prior to May 1, 2020, into a trust. This means that each abuse survivor would be compensated through the trust rather than through costly and lengthy litigation brought against the Apostolate that could hinder ministry and reduce available recoveries. We want to assure parents that by contributing to the channeling injunction, the parishes are seeking the best legal avenue to protect students’ educational opportunities and minimize impact on operations. Prior to the archdiocese filing for bankruptcy, lawsuits claiming sexual abuse were brought not only against the archdiocese, but against the site where the accused cleric was assigned or the accused layperson volunteered or was employed. In the past, the Archdiocese of New Orleans stepped in and with its insurance providers limited any financial impact of the claim on the Apostolate. Once the Archdiocese emerges from bankruptcy, this will no longer be the case. After the Archdiocese filed for Chapter 11, the Louisiana legislature changed the law on the statute of limitations for abuse claims. With this change in the law, parishes, their schools and other agencies are now subject to lawsuits for decades-old claims previously barred by operation of law. With this change in the law, it has become clear that a channeling injunction is necessary to preserve the ongoing financial vitality of the individual parishes and agencies and their ability to provide a quality education for our children and continue to serve the faithful.”

Per the Guardian, it appears the Archbishop is seeking 100 million to cover the claims. A large portion of that will now come from parents who paying tuition for their kids and donations from parishioners.

As others have said, why can’t the Vatican fork the bill? This could have been resolved long ago, but Church appears to continue to prioritize staying in bankruptcy as long as possible to keep detailed records of abusive priests with children sealed from the public eye. Jones and Walker is obviously dragging this out for them. Real mess, this organization. Prayers for all the victims.

100 mil is probably just the church’s share. There will likely be insurance money too.

There is a lot of precedent for how this will play out. For the dozens of other archdiocese’s that have gone through this, across the country, the cost ranges from $50,000 to $350,000 per claimant. That would put the top end at @150mil for New Orleans.

And getting the Vatican to chip in does not appear to be in the cards. I don’t think there is any precedent for that and really don’t think New Orleans is going to change anything.

I’m left with the moral dilemma.
?
To think that money that I give to the church goes toward paying off sexual molestation claims, is disgusting to me.
Is my charitable giving to the church a justifiable, moral contribution or am I giving to an immoral institution?
Bottom line- is it a sin to give money to any institution which is using that money to pay off sexual molestation victims?
