The amount of time and resources that go into lawn maintenance is very high

Think about the amount of energy, raw materials, and human time that goes into producing and delivering a single gas powered lawn mower to a store for purchase.
Then all the time and energy used to run that mower. To maintain a yard that many people don’t even set foot on. And that is one mower and one yard. Expand it out for all other yard equipment and maintenance in the country.And we haven’t even talked about water.
Big Yard has convinced us we need all these things.

I push my yard. Takes like 20 mins. I have very little grass tho.

I replaced my grass with rock designs. Maintenance free. Have AstroTurf in the back.

Louisiana yards would look like prehistoric jungles in 2 months if we didn’t maintain them. I’m fine with using copious amounts of time & resources if it keeps snakes and rats away from my house.

What kills me is the fact that all the cookie cutter tract folks with .12 acres mortgaged to the hilt seem to think they are making a really smart economic decision to pay somebody to mow .06 acres.

I pay a Mexican fellow $25 every other week to take care of the yard. 
It’s not a big economic investment for most people I guess.

i'm about to weed and feed my yard but my neighbor has allowed his yard to become overrun and i fear it's pointless to do much

I legit love taking care of my lawn. I’ve gotten garden of the month honors three times, and the HOA resident of the month twice just because of my lawn maintenance. That, and running on the treadmill is like a soothing therapy for me.

You have it backwards. Big Yard exists bc people decided they want their yard to look good.
Years of migration to the big city left people wanting some green space. And this produced what we have today.

If i could move tomorrow, it would be into a neighborhood with zero lots.
I get tired of dumping money into a yard and flower beds that basically give you zero return for your money
