The amount of people I see daily playing on their phones while driving on the interstate

Its completely out of hand.
Just on my 30 minute each way daily commute, I see 3-6 people on the I10 totally focused on their phones while doing 60mph. Actually a lot of them are going much slower than 60, since they're not paying enough attention to realize they're going below the speed limit.
And you can always tell who's on their phone:
-slowly drifting into the lane next to them then jerking back into their own lane when they finally glance up from their phone
-constantly tapping on their brakes just in case the car in front of them slows down, but they can't be bothered to pull their eyes from the phone for long enough to see if in fact the car in front of them is slowing down
-driving slow in the left lane with a mile long line of cars behind them because they are too oblivious to realize they are fricking up everyone else's commute
Just today, I was getting onto the interstate, and the lady in front of me was going so slow, I had to basically stop on the on ramp and wait for traffic to clear up, because I couldn't accelerate to interstate speed with her in front of me. She was so oblivious, she drove onto the shoulder for a bit before she realized she wasn't on the road anymore. When I passed her - becasue she was still driving like 35mph on the interstate - she was still completely engaged with her phone.
Not 10 minutes later, I was on a state highway, and I had to make a left turn. I'm in the left hand lane, with my blinker on, and as I'm slowing down I notice in my rearview mirror a pickup truck behind me isn't slowing down at all. I have to swerve onto the left shoulder at this point and almost wound up on the grass on the neutral ground. The truck, at the last second swerves into the right hand lane once he noticed me. For a brief instant before he swerved, I could see in my mirror this grown arse man looking at his phone.
I know Louisiana recently passed yet another useless law that doesn't actually stop people from playing on their phones while driving.
It really needs to be made criminal where if you're caught on your phone while driving, you're arrested, your car is impounded and you face jail time.
And the police need to do a way better job of policing this. If cops were actually proactive about fighting crime, instead of waiting on the side of the interstate for it to come to them, they’d quickly fill their ticket books.
And that's my rant for the day.

it really stresses the importance of a good vehicle alignment these days.

This is why I hope for fully autonomous self driving ASAP.

shouldn't you be watching the road instead of looking at other people driving
sounds like you are a road hazard as well

Does watching the road not include being aware of the drivers around me? Or am I only supposed to stare at the road and hope for the best?

I had a school bus driver that would read her Bible while driving.

You can usually pick them out from behind. Slow speed and swerving. Then once they get off the phone, they come by at 100 mph.

My family is on Life360 and that app caused me to stop looking at my phone while driving. It gives you stats of distracted drives, high speeds, hard breaking, etc. Had way more distracted driving count than I would have guessed. Now it's like a goal to have as little as possible each week.
My 25 year old niece had just an insane amount of distracted drives, hard breaking, rapid acceleration and speeding incidents. Started to call her out on it and she's gotten much better.
Texting/looking at your phone while driving is certainly a problem. Wish cops would give out tickets more often for it.

within the last few years, driving anywhere near the center line on 2 way roads is suicidal behavior. at least once a day I have oncoming traffic swerve so far across the line that if I weren't hugging the shoulder it would result in a head on collision.

We have criminals who commit murder, rape, arson, and rape. (They like rape) .And they don't get jail time. I get your point, but until we punish more violent offenses more harshly, I'm gonna have to disagree.
And speaking of useless laws, do you really think yet another law requiring harsher penalties will do any good? We have judges who don't give two shits and DAs who go along with them.

Just mirror DUI punishments, but with 1 warning allowed.
