I mean, it was kind of a big deal and directly related to the demise of the bison.

Quanta Parker is my distant cousin, my gggwhatever grandmother was a sister to his mother. I think I will proclaim myself to be an Indian chief. Gotta keep the family tradition going

but didn’t we also intentionally try and make them extinct?

There was a historian on the Meateater podcast who said there is no record of that being an actual goal. One guy in Texas mentioned it and the rumor grew from there. Some folks may have been trying but it wasn't official policy.

The general sentiment was that the buffalo were a gift from God to help settle the west.

This is a great book about them.

He also had caves on his place with cave drawings that were over 1000 years old.

I had a few classes with a guy who found a bunch of ancient AF pictographs in a cave on his family's land. He had em tattooed all over his back. One of the few tattoos I thought were cool.

I caught the first episode and to think all those animals were slaughtered just for their hides and tongues with the meat left to rot on the plains is typical of the mentality of people back then. To realize that in about 80 years they were almost hunted to extinction is mind blowing to me.

The hunters deeply impacted the lives of Native American Tribes who hunted them to feed their families, make warm clothing, build their teepees, utilize the tendons for bowstrings, etc. I can understand why they were so pissed off at the white man.

That meme about white man being dumb enough to screw up what they had going is true af. They were living the dream.

the removal of the bison from the Great Plains led directly to the dust bowl

sometimes race is relevant. the problem is that they inject into EVERY story, so even when it is actually relevant, it is equally as annoying.

I don't know if you watched the show and saw the part about Teddy Roosevelt when they were talking about how he and other hunters in the late 1800's thought white men were becoming soft and hunting was a way to prove you're manly. But the woman made some comment about how he wanted to prove white supremacy and masculinity(I'm paraphrasing). Made it sound like it had nothing to do with what we did to the Indians.

Was amazing how a species was almost driven to extinction in 100 yrs ... they said its the largest mass killing of a species by man to date, I may have a bone to pick w that. The demise of the cod on the east coast is probably greater based on biomass but it took a few hundred yrs to overfish it.
Saw a "wild" herd of Buffalo in Colorado a gew yrs back in a fed/state park, damn impressive animals. On a personal note they mention buffalo bill in series, my G grandpa saw Buffalo bill at an show in buffalo ny, i remember seeing the notice as a boy and asking him about it. Ya csb

Super cool.

As someone who grew up with a pet buffalo, it's always cool to see stories like this. My dad always had an affinity for the old West growing up, and I guess our buffalo was just the cherry on the top lol
