If I had not seen the date of this OpEd piece, I would have thought it was a joke.

Our Views: Now that St. George proposal is gaining steam, it would be cynical to change the rules

quote:

We have our doubts about whether carving a separate city of St. George from southeast Baton Rouge is a good idea. Even so, we applaud how hard St. George supporters have worked to advance their plan. It seems cynical to change the rules for getting such a new city incorporated now that the proposal is gaining steam.

Now, state Sen. Yvonne Colomb has filed a bill in the Legislature that would require a majority of voters across the parish, not just in the proposed boundaries of St. George, to approve the measure before it becomes a reality.

The kicker is that the bill only applies to EBR Parish.

Some politician is trying to pass a law that the whole parish gets to vote.

Making it a parish-wide vote.

I’d bet there’s a disproportionate number of subscribers in St.George compared to BR. Advocate knows where their bread is buttered. But their opinion is correct

they are refering to the proposed bill from last week on letting the entire parish vote.... a bill that has a minimum population in the parish before it comes into effect. A population number which only one parish in the state has..... EBR. Imagine that.

The Advocate don't care. They made it a point to annex into the city limits of BR before the latest petition effort started.

Taking a big tax revenue source away from Baton Rouge is against the rules. Not the actual rule change, but the purpose of the rules change.

BR Business Report changed their tune and now say they should have been given an ISD like they originally wanted. BR Business Report will regret supporting Broome in the Mayor election after there is no more Business to report on in BR.

St George Could Have Been Avoided

I was going to say that just because the Advocate published someone's opinion doesn't mean that the paper itself supports it.

However, it seems like this is an Editorial from someone on staff. Though, I cannot seem to find the author's name.

How about taking a big tax revenue source that is generated from an unincorporated area and using it to fund city services that the rest of the parish does not have access to?

This whole thing has been a giant comedy of errors by the Dems within BR.

They may have won a bunch of battles but they’re going to lose the war because of how badly they fricked up and overplayed their hand repeatedly.

It's sink or swim time for St. George, toss them off the boat without a life jacket and see what happens.

If they would have given this area the ISD they requested, this wouldn’t have happened.

Bunch of idiots.

There were a bunch of instances like that from the ISD all the way up through the first petition.

Idiots like SWB, Colomb, John Delgado, and others repeatedly fricked things up in ways that pushed more and more people toward St George through killing an ISD, attacking St George supporters as terrorists, using strategic annexation of areas in an attempt to invalidate the St George petition, holding up the first petition for an unusually long amount of time to defeat it by a small margin, etc.

All of these actions had repercussions, such as killing Delgado’s chances at Mayor resulting in SWB’s election and the Broome administration fricking up everything they touched, re-energizing the St George push for a second try.

Considering St George is already covered by a fire district, the EBR sheriff office, a private water company, and a parish wide garbage service, I don’t think the chances of failure are high.

They can pay their fair share of parish services and have a lot of money left over as of now.

This would not have happened had Sharon Weston-Broome and Pat Smith not blocked the area's attempt at an independent school district. "You must be an incorporated city to have your own schools!" Okay, we'll make our own city! "No, you can't do this because we'll lose money!" Not as much money as you'd lose when folks bolt for Livingston and Ascension Parishes!
