The Advocate on Prison: “ Louisiana's slave labor and slave wages must be abolished.”

Louisiana supports slave labor and slave wages. The question is whether our state Legislature and voters do, too.
Imagine fighting for slavery these days. Imagine arguing that some people are inferior, and therefore some of us should relegate them to menial and other tasks for nominal wages. Imagine being forced to work, and doing the work for a non-negotiated wage that amounts to pennies per hour.
If state Rep. Edmond Jordan, D-Brusly, gets what he wants, he’ll get enough support in the Legislature to allow voters to amend the Louisiana Constitution to make involuntary servitude a thing of the past.
quote:
Compared to a number of other legislative measures, a bill Jordan filed would simply strike a few words to eliminate a practice that he and prison reform advocates find unacceptable and ask Louisiana voters to approve the elimination of slavery for any purpose. Our constitution bans slavery — except when it is a part of punishment for people in prison because they’ve been convicted of a crime. If Jordan’s joint resolution is approved, the “individual dignity” language would simply read, “Slavery and involuntary servitude are prohibited,” dropping “except in the latter case as punishment for crime.”

I thought prisoners liked to get out of the pen to do trustee work?

Don't even acknowledge Will Sutton exists or link his op-eds.

If they don't want to work then they don't have to.
Not sure how this is beneficial unless people think somehow fewer incarceration because the labor is a huge profit maker.

We must end the crime-to-prison pipeline

someone should tell that idiot it has been since the 60s
prison work is 100% voluntary and they even pay you for it
you have a choice, sit in a cell all day or volunteer for prison work and maybe get to be outside the bars for a while each day. no one is forced to do it
now watch that jackasses next line of BS after this isnt to require all prisoners to get $15 hr wages

I would support minimum wage.

Is this where we blame private prisons for the jail population instead of the government who makes the laws and sentences the people to jail?
Posted on 4/11/21 at 6:39 pm to SPEEDY
At hard labor. Kinda divides felonies and misdemeanors.
Posted on 4/11/21 at 6:39 pm to SPEEDY
Slavery for prisoners is constitutionally legal.

The Advocate needs to be careful. They are probably 3-5 years away from only being able to afford prison labor

We are. Already letting illegals flow in with no concern. Only the tipping point.

I think we've seen enough instances where these private prisons have incentived judges sending people to prison when that's not what scoresheets say.

People have exploited each other since the beginning of recorded history. What makes us special?

We need 3 strikes and you're dead.

How about ending slave mentality and people can think and work for themselves.
