The Absurdities of Youth Baseball

I'm struggling to understand how parents justify focusing so much time on something that will ultimately amount to absolutely nothing in life for 99% of children. I guess if there was a practical skill that resulted from baseball that could be applied to a trade or career it would almost be understandable, but literally almost no practical skill comes from playing baseball other than how to play baseball. The odds of your child getting into college on a baseball scholarship are extremely low and the odds of them actually making a career of it are so low that it's laughable. Do parents seriously think all this time and money couldn't be spent on something a little more constructive? Children need variety in their activities while they're growing up. I'm not saying quit it altogether, but people seem to be absolutely obsessed with it to an unhealthy point. I don't get it, but to each his/her own I guess.

Because they all enjoy it.

It's their second chance to live the dream.

Its about being taught/coached to learn and develop skills just like in the real world.

Should we not take them fishing or hunting either?
What about letting them play football or basketball or any other sport for that matter.
Should I not let my daughter play tennis or do ballet or piano either?
Should we just not let our kids be a part of any sport or team because it "will ultimately amount to absolutely nothing in life for them"?

I'd much rather parents be obsessed with their kids playing baseball than ignoring them while their kids play video games all day

When I it batted .400 my last year playing, I caught a ton of shite from my coach.

For some it goes far beyond that. Constantly pushing their kid to the point enjoyment long ceased to be.

uh.... they get to learn some good life lessons and values while they are playing a game they enjoy
the odds of any child getting education paid for or having a sport become a profession are astronomically bad....
anyone that starts their kid playing under this premise is....
insane

There is a big difference between playing rec ball - where kids learn life lessons, get some exercise, and meet friends, and the obnoxiousness of travel ball.
And it's the parents who ruin it... because they want to live their lives through their child.

but, i totally agree that parents are wasting their time and money by dragging their kids to travel ball tournaments before the age of 12. Baseball dramatically changes when the kids start playing on the big field (60/90) and start using the dead BBCOR bats.

I am glad that when I was a kid, I got to choose what sport I wanted to play, and I played it. No parents advising me on what to play. To them it was a good way for me to learn teamwork and sportsmanship. Nothing more and nothing less
