I believe the point he (so poorly) tried to make was not about sports or competition, but about travel baseball specifically and spending every weekend out of town at some baseball tournament.

My kids will have the opportunity to play city ball and all stars if selected. Travel ball and year round bs is not an option. I'm also open to camps if they're interested. If your kids got it he/she's got it. Playing 200 games a year won't change that.

Happens all the time. Parents holding their kids back in school, etc.

Should we not take them fishing or hunting either?

What about letting them play football or basketball or any other sport for that matter.

Should I not let my daughter play tennis or do ballet or piano either?

Yes to all this. This is the whole point of my post. Children need variety. Baseball 6-7 days a week for 15 years isn't going to amount to a damn thing for most kids.

what if that what the kid enjoys doing? He's playing a sport he loves and he gets to spend the weekends playing it with his friends. Whats wrong with that?

Looks like you finally got it at the end there.

Everyone's not the same man. I don't understand why a guy would split the head of his dick and as long as noone is making me do it, I don't need to understand either.

The travel ball nonsense is really out of hand. I've seen more and more communities get rid of regular little league programs because they want to field teams "that can compete". That's bad for the kids in the midrange athletic level. The kids at the top and at the bottom obviously won't get anything out of it but the kids in the middle won't have an opportunity to enjoy the sport or develop their skills. Travel ball has turned into a social circle for the parents.

Not ever an option? Or until a certain age?

I'm not sure what options my son will have in 10 years (he's 3). But I was 13 when I decided baseball was the only sport I wanted to play. Of course, that was when this Travel ball stuff was just getting started. 35 games with my high school; 70 games with my summer team; 15 games during the fall. It was probably too much but I loved it and my parents probably hated it because of the costs.

Yeah we should pull them out of sports and they can play Candy Saga crap on their ipad their whole childhood! That'll prepare them for real life of playing on social media all day at work while McD's pays them $15/hr

this is my second year stepping into our local Rec league as a coach with a kid not on the team.I hope the kids can appreciate that.
My son played Tourney Travel ball and Highschool ball.
Tourney travel ball helped him out I'm not going to lie. It also immersed him into the "clique" and got his name out there. Alot of highschool teams pretty much draft groups of kids from established tourney travel teams as their freshman teams unless the kid is just an outstanding phenom.

You don't really believe that, do you?

Do you really believe that an 8 year old should only be doing activities that develop skills directly applicable to his career?

Right! They need variety and nothing is worth obsessing over at that age, but to say there is nothing to be learned in any sport that doesn't help you later in life is just ignorant....or a shitty troll attempt.

Just like with ANYTHING. There are some parents that are complete assholes and take it way to seriously. My son plays baseball about 6 months out of the year and football/training 5 months of the year and usually takes about a month off. I could give a shite less, but will support him as long as he enjoys playing either. There are crazy parents in Volleyball, lacrosse, dance, swim, baseball, football, literally everything! Baseball, for some reason seems to get the most attention.

Both my brother and I were only allowed to play little league sports growing up an all starts. No AAU, no travel ball. We chose to play sports every day at our house whether it be shooting ball, chipping golf balls, tackle football, hell we even shot long bows at targets. We both played and started HS sports over kids that played year around. I honestly think kids that play year around peak too early and get burnt out. My dad never made play anything but also never let us quit in the middle of something. He supported us and would coach us up at home but never from the stands during games. I think that enabled my brother and I to become successful HS athletes with my brother going on to play in college.

Those people are the exception not the rule... My oldest is on a Academy team in BR and every single kid on his team plays baseball seasonally.. We travel outside the BR area a total of 4-5 times in a 5 month season. and a few of those are to Lafayette. We will end our season either at the beach or a Cal Ripken experience tourney..

Because it's fun and kids make friends while playing.

Looking back I realized I never had to make friends on my own in my entire life due to sports.

Just from playing sports I was friends with a lot of people naturally just from playing sports together.
