You're lucky he does, because he probably hasn't learned any other usable skills to translate past high school.

guess again......

he probably has about 3 hours lifetime total on video games...

way more time spent hunting and fishing than playing baseall.

he knows how to compete, work hard, be a team mate, be a leader... win with grace and lose with dignity.

and has gotten queries for visits to schools I am willing to wager you never could have gotten into.

This. I loved playing in that league. Never did travel ball and I'm glad there was a better option when I was that age seeing what it is today. Youth baseball is 90% trash now. There are only a handful of teams and coaches that "get it".

I made above the national and state average on the ACT and played baseball since I was 4, rec and travel and high school, and I am doing just fine in the real world.

The problem is parents who have their kids in select or travel ball and clearly the kid doesn't have it. You can tel what kids have it and which ones don't.

I was good at baseball in high school but my parents told me not to be retarded and start thinking I was going to be a pro player.

It's a matter of percentages. What's the probability of your child making it to a pro level, and THEN making it to a level of pro ball where they can be successful for a long period of time and be financially stable? vs. What is the probability that your child can grow up and learn a skill that can translate to the outside world? Like say, being an accountant, engineer, lawyer...etc.

What skills? Does he know a trade? Does he know what he wants to specialize at university?

He may be different, but the problem I saw all through high school was kids and their parents teaching them ONE thing - usually sports - and they don't know how to do shite else when they get out of school.

Instead of spending countless hours teaching and encouraging little Johnny to start a little business and learn how to manage money, they spend hours traveling to random cities to play baseball. Then little Johnny scores an 18 on his ACT and has shitty grades and can't manage money and the parents try to figure out what went wrong.
Please tell me you don't think this is how things happen?

travel ball is good and needed for kids starting around the age of 12. They need to learn the "high school" rules that USSSA has to offer around that age. The proper way to take leads, pitch out of stretch, pick offs, etc. It allows the kids to know the game very well a couple years in advance to high school.

You must've been the kid who thought he was gonna play in the MLB when he was 7 but always sat the bench.

Hopefully my kids won't be so retarded they have to travel the country playing baseball nonstop for 3 years to learn rules that can be picked up in a couple of weeks.

An argument from authority is more often than not, a fallacious argument. In this case it most certainly is. It's not a real argument.

A real argument would be to tell him why his opinion is wrong, not to tell him that he's wrong because he has an opinion.

I can walk you through this.

mine was 9 the last year it ran.... travel ball didn't kill it... aggressive marketing from cypress mounds was the final straw. all of the teams in the league also did tourneys...

sad day the day that shut down.
