I never had the making of an NBA player, but I love the sport and enjoyed the hell out of playing biddy. I made lots of friends and learned sportsmanship and competitiveness at an early age.
This post is stupid. If you listed soccer where they don't even take score then maybe you'd have some sort of a point.

I honestly think kids that play year around peak too early and get burnt out.
This is the part that is odd to me. Even professional players are burnt out by September. It cant be good for some of these kids playing baseball or training 11 months out of the year.

The travel ball nonsense is really out of hand. I've seen more and more communities get rid of regular little league programs because they want to field teams "that can compete". That's bad for the kids in the midrange athletic level. The kids at the top and at the bottom obviously won't get anything out of it but the kids in the middle won't have an opportunity to enjoy the sport or develop their skills. Travel ball has turned into a social circle for the parents.
travel ball has several levels
AA - a step above or equal to wreck ball(which was ruined by the koombaya parents)
AAA - mid range more competitive - fewer outliers(kids with perfect birthdays).
major - kids that are at what ever age it is are more developed and quite a few more out liers on these teams
elite... full blown mercenary baseball - bringing in pitchers from all over the place for certain tourneys.... this level is pure insanity - and no these aren't the guys on the street or outside your grocery asking for money - that's wreck and AA teams for the most part..
as for year round ball - there are 68 kids in the high school program my kid plays in and a grand total of 5 played year round ball and even that small number for 4 of them it was only 1 year.
when YBBR died in baton rouge, the last good "league" died and that was 8-9 years ago.

what if that what the kid enjoys doing? He's playing a sport he loves and he gets to spend the weekends playing it with his friends. Whats wrong with that?
If that's the case then that's great. Too many times though the kids are pushed into playing and the parents convince themselves jr is having a great time when they're not. There are plenty of family's where if the kid said he'd rather play piano than baseball they'd refuse.

You have to learn to ignore the shitty parents.

They get stuck in a bubble world and think it's normal. Their priorities are also messed up. Also, most people aren't great parents. They try to live their lives through their kids lives which is a big problem.
Instead of spending countless hours teaching and encouraging little Johnny to start a little business and learn how to manage money, they spend hours traveling to random cities to play baseball. Then little Johnny scores an 18 on his ACT and has shitty grades and can't manage money and the parents try to figure out what went wrong.

so you're saying a kid shouldn't be active? you're post is ridiculous. totally ridiculous. i made some of the best memories while playing baseball and other sports as well. it's a chance for kids to make life long memories and friends. but you want a kid to be a robot and just stare at a tv all day. Getting to the college level doesn't matter that much to every kid. playing and loving the game is enough. kids understand not everyone is good enough.

Children need variety in their activities while they're growing up

I'm not saying quit it altogether, but people seem to be absolutely obsessed with it to an unhealthy point
quote:If you are ending with this, then why the post? Go frick yourself with a big rubber dick
I don't get it, but to each his/her own I guess.

Should we not take them fishing or hunting either?
What about letting them play football or basketball or any other sport for that matter.
Should I not let my daughter play tennis or do ballet or piano either?
Should we just not let our kids be a part of any sport or team because it "will ultimately amount to absolutely nothing in life for them"?
Exactly. My son played youth baseball for one reason. Because he loved it. He wanted to be out there with his buddies having fun, learning the game, and learning things like teamwork and sportsmanship.
Now my daughter is playing girls youth softball for the very same reasons.

The problem isn't activities like piano, ballet, football, basketball or baseball. It's spending more time on it in a week then a full time job. When you spend more time playing baseball in a week then doing school work there is a problem. Travel ball has a tremendous opportunity cost and those talking about the benefits are missing that what you learn from sports can be learned from playing A game on saturdays and a few practices a week. It isnt necessary to spend 3 hours a night m-f and all day Saturday and Sunday playing baseball to learn teamwork and hard work.

- Teamwork
- Understanding team and individual contribution to success
- Listening to coaches and understand improving your skills as a player/person
- Getting along and being productive in an environment of different personalities
- Understanding success and failure, winning and losing
- Understanding that you have to put in work to improve with competition
These are all valuable life lessons learned while doing something they enjoy. Some of it is silly and over the top, but most isn't. Let me guess, OP is not a parent, yet all knowing about kids and kids' sports.....

Wait for the obligatory "why do you care what other people do with their lives" retort.

The sign is actually right. There does come a day where you can't watch them play anymore. And it comes far faster than you think it will. Enjoy your kids being kids and let them enjoy being kids. It only happens once in their lifetime.

Youth baseball;
Should be fun
Kids should learn how to take instruction
Kids should learn team work
Kids should get exercise
Adults should sit down, cheer for their team, and stay out of the coach's business
Kids take dance, but few become Michael Jackson. Kids take art, and few become Picasso. Kids take piano, but few become Elton John. Kids play youth sports, and few become Mickey Mantle.
Should we stop kids from doing anything but school?

my baseball playing senior has a significantly higher than the state and national average ACT score.....
in fact of the big 4 men's sports baseball players have the highest average ACT scores....

The problem is parents who have their kids in select or travel ball and clearly the kid doesn't have it. You can tel what kids have it and which ones don't. These parents inflate these kids heads by paying for them to be on these teams and then they get to high school and can't make a freshmen team.
