A former Gurkha has smashed a world record by climbing six of the world's highest mountains in just over four weeks.
Nirmal 'Nims' Purja has succeeded in the first phase of 'Project Possible', his mission to speed climb the world's 14 highest mountains in seven months.
The current record is seven years, 11 months and 14 days.
The former British soldier was the first Gurkha to join the elite Special Boat Service and has already got three world records for speed climbing to his name.

Is it really worth it...? I'd rather wait in line at Everest in Animal Kingdom, at least I won't die...
I've done some exhilarating stuff outdoors, but that pic doesn't look like anything I'd want to do, just an exercise in breathing, or not being able to

There are too many people with money and egos climbing who lack the skills and physical attributes to be on the mountain.
If you ever get a chance go and see Beck Weathers speak. He'll explain what an a-hole he was and how he had to fill his ego.

And Weathers had over a decade of experience and training.

Soon one of the obstacles will be climbing over frozen bodies.

Isnt it already? I've heard they use them as markers already.

Yeah, I'd have kicked that woman off the ladder after pissing on her hands.

There should be some sort of mountain qualification before attempting everest. Too many people with more money than climbing skills.
Negative..
This is the Darwin Olympics
It should be televised.

So they can't drive or climb ladders without causing traffic jams
Do you mean women or Asians?

Amazing what people will do to have a purpose in life

At this point the best thing they can do is limit the number of people who climb it on a daily basis.
But that’ll never happen because of the money tied to the tourism.

Going up is optional. Going down is not.

The problem is the guides more than the climbers. They are willing to allow ill prepared climbers to attempt a summit for the right price and they are the ones who should really know better.
That's their source of income. Guides are basically there to help ill prepared people do stuff they could never do on their own.
The climbers are wealthy people looking to throw money at poor guides to get up the mountain. If Guide A won't take them, they'll offer more money to Guide B, who will.
One of the things about Everest, you can make all the right choices and still die up there. Too many people don't understand that because they don't live in a world where those consequences are real and permanent. You can't buy your way out of a freak storm when you're stuck at 28,000 feet.

I'm currently reading a book written by a guy who climbed Everest and had crew members not make it down. shite's crazy. I've joked with friends about wanting to climb it but I don't have the time, money, or nuts to do it

I am looking at pictures and it doesn't look like there is any room for traffic to fit both ways all the way near the top. Not sure how they navigate that.
Do they go down the other side?
