Yep, Into Thin Air is the one I'm on. I'll have to check out Boukreev's book next.

Are we gonna be drinking buddies? First watches, now Everest?

This.

I couldn’t afford to climb Everest even if I wanted to, but I would like to hike to base camp.

That photo, there is nothing adventurous or hard about that now. It has become corporatized and tarnished. I would say the next Everest is deep-deep sea diving without tours. Solo adventurer going down a trench. Dark and unknown. Now that is an adventure.

I’m in my late 50s, still run a fair amount, have the time, means and enjoy a challenge. Everest is nuts! Running Comrades would be enough for me.

Rent out single or two person submersibles. Holy shite, you are definitely on to something. That sounds absolutely amazing.

One day far in the future, someone is going to think there was some settlement at the top of Everest due to all the bodies.

Not for the trenches...too long going down and not that much to see (from what we have seen from going into the Marianas.

Instead, how about more shallow trips to the boiling water vents with the huge clams and lots of living things that would be moving and a bit more predicable. And when the renters do something stupid, the vessel could be raised for reuse in hours, not days.

bullshite. It's very difficult to do. People die up there. At that altitude every step is a chore. Then you get to the top exhausted and you have to make your way back down. God forbid that weather moves in suddenly.
