Good summary of what went wrong and why. Some details about panicked climbers who survived but causes other deaths (woman wearing Chinese branded gear who 'froze' at the top of a ladder leaving traffic jams in both directions), a guy who celebrated his seventh tallest peaks climb and danced a jig at the top and died coming down.

The day with the big death count: eleven of two hundred died.

So they can't drive or climb ladders without causing traffic jams

I have watched documentaries and read books about Everest. There was one guy who nearly died in an attempt who stated that he was at peace with Everest. Well, me and Everest have no problems.

I would love to hike up to base camp and explore but have no desire to do something where so many other irresponsible folks can cause your death even if you have prepared properly for the summit.

that seems problematic

There should be some sort of mountain qualification before attempting everest. Too many people with more money than climbing skills.

There is a requirement to have summitted another high altitude peak but people lie.

Zero sympathy....especially the a-hole who danced a jig at the top and dropped from a heart attack.

Mock the gods and this is what happens

Absolutely should implement the rule that you have had to climbed successfully a number of other peaks first

Is it really worth it...? I'd rather wait in line at Everest in Animal Kingdom, at least I won't die...

The problem is the guides more than the climbers. They are willing to allow ill prepared climbers to attempt a summit for the right price and they are the ones who should really know better.

I'm not understanding the problem. The bodies are frozen and you have a pickaxe. Time to get to work.

There is now. There wasn't when these people died.

quote:

Some 250 people made the ascent on May 23 alone, with sources telling the BBC that there were simply not enough officials on the mountain to manage the crowd.

Intense competition between tour operators who fear telling wealthy clients that an ascent is not possible was also blamed.

Nepal has since announced that everyone seeking a permit to climb Everest must have prior experience of climbing at least one high-altitude mountain to qualify.

I always wonder how the guides and experienced climbers try to wrangle the inexperienced idiots up there...

Like what if you were crossing/climbing an already-shaky ladder and some crazy person insists on climbing on right behind you?

I love mountains and snow and cold and pushing myself and adventure and risk, but why anyone would ever want to do that shite is beyond me. Doesn't even look like good outdoor fun any more.
