And they hire recently graduated dentists with large student loan debt and pay them shite.
Most recent graduates don’t make top dollar in their fields.
If they’re good they’ll land a better job after a few years

Last I heard he’s starting back up as a family practice...doing it the right way this time.
Yes, his non-compete is up. They are building a new building on Perkins.

I meant the corporate dentistry model and wasn’t aware he had sold out. The Heartland, Aspen model.
“Since you receive a letter in the mail every other week from a bank telling you to refinance, you might be tempted to pull the trigger. Thus, your big payments get locked in. Can you take the refinancing risk and then borrow to buy a practice too?
It makes many of my clients terrified. Instead of buying a practice, they might work for years at Heartland, Pacific, Aspen, Comfort, etc. as an associate just to have a guaranteed income to pay down their student loans
Remember that the goal of any employer is to give you just enough that you won’t want to leave. That can lead to complacency on the part of employees. One of the fast-growing ways to make new grads feel attached to their jobs (in general not just in dentistry) is student loan payment benefits.”

Pardon my ignorance, but who are the Penningtons?
Doc Pennington found a shite ton of oil in north Baton Rouge close to where Exxon is. Gave LSU 125 million dollar grant and LSU opened the Pennington Biomedical Research Center. Kids have not had to work too hard since then....

Is this the same couple who’s toddler died in a pool accident? Did that happen at the Pennington’s?
You may be thinking of another husband and wife dentist couple, Robert and Krista Bruns. Their young son died by drowning in a pond on their property.

It is the grandkids. His son Claude died in the oilfield in the late 50’s. Paula, Claude III and another brother I can’t remember his name were raised by them and inherited the estate. One of the great granddaughters just mowed the family house down on Acadian Thruway.
ETA: Daryl. I think he was raising the small deer in East Feliciana years ago.

The...idea...of paying off student debt is great. But, as always, a financially prudent company can only afford so many benefits for employees and, at some point, there must be a trade-off when it comes to extra benefits...like paying off student debt.
The best way to do all of this, if you're small enough (would be a shite-show for larger companies to manage), is to offer employees which "benefit channel", for lack of a better term, that they would like to choose.
For example:
Employee (1), New Hire, Recent Grad
Option 1: Higher base salary, normal benefits, normal bonus
Option 2: Lower base, employer paid portion of student debt, no bonus
One problem with the employer paying existing debt is, that unlike tuition reimbursement, none of the loan repayment is non-taxable for the employee, nor can the company claim a deduction.
I'm a big fan of outside the box options in regards to performance rewards. For example, I negotiated a three-year longevity kicker in my agreement, which paid 10% of may annual salary on my anniversary (on top of my 30% annual bonus). When the time came for my 10% kicker - I proposed to my CEO the option of giving me a portion in cash, and the rest towards a watch of my choosing that they could put on the company card.
I love my watch.

Scary times now for dental students. They are being preyed upon by the Dental schools in the form of exorbitant tuition and the DMSOs that under pay them and promise to pay off their loans. They also borrow living expenses while in school, which is a stupid decision.
If they go to work at Aspen or Heartland or the like, they have to execute treatment plans that some treatment plan coordinator diagnosed, and they get to be responsible for 100% of the risk involved in this treatment.
Sucks to be them or any of the patients they have to over treat.

And to add to the saga, Sharon Pennington, married to Claude, lives in Bocage but came from nothing. Her mother, Elena Palmer, was a pe teacher at Glen Oaks High School and ran Palmer Gymnastics, off of Choctaw Drive. Nobody talks about it. Elena lives with her daughter and granddaughter in Bocage. Anybody who trained with Elena knew her daughter Sharon “was meant for great things”
