Not mine, but sure wish it was. In a nutshell, why I think watches are awesome.
First, the (pocket) watch in question:
Second, the story (from Hodinkee, which is briefer than the lot essay):
Third, here is a link to the lot: Phillips Geneve
I can hardly think of a more beautiful and historically important watch. To paraphrase Indiana Jones, “this belongs in a museum.”
First, the (pocket) watch in question:
Second, the story (from Hodinkee, which is briefer than the lot essay):
quote:
Arguably the most historically important lot of the year (maybe for the past few years), this watch was gifted as the "Victory Watch" to General Charles de Gaulle for the Allies' win during World War II.
Four pieces were given to the Allied leaders on Christmas 1945. The project was undertaken in secret, with Louis Cottier himself a part of the effort, and the famed Stern Frères (yes, the family that owns Patek, for those who don't know) was tasked with the dials. The watch here features Joan of Arc with an hour hand in the shape of the Cross of Lorraine (the symbol of Free France during the resistance). The caseback has a "V" for "Victory" encircling the globe, and an engraving around the edge.
President Harry Truman's watch had the Statue of Liberty, with the hour hand in the shape of an olive branch; Joseph Stalin's watch had a worker in front of a steel mill, the hour hand the communist 5-point star; Winston Churchill got a depiction of St. George (the UK's patron saint) slaying the dragon, with the hour hand a trident. How it came back to market, I have no idea, but the estimate is CHF 300,000 to 600,000, and I hope a museum in France gets it. It's incredibly moving and important, and damn near flawless.

I had the one with red accents on my wrist. About 2019-2020. Chickened out. Or….. finally made a smart money decision.

If I buy one from them, I'm going to use a CC and pay the extra 3%. Get the watch here and have it checked out by an AD.
I have buddies who’s used Bobs a lot. They’re legit but you’re never going to get a good deal.

I think I am done with the Swatch collabs. Not because I don't like them but we "collected" about 20 of them when my wife and I were travelling and we just don't wear them often. We would have been fine with 3-4. I did recase a couple into metal cases, but I was closer to the 100th person that did that. AFAIK I was the first to recase the SwatchxBlancpain Scuba into a metal case and I only did that because "everybody" said it couldn't be done. It was more work than the Moon Swatch but I did it. There are some other things I would like to do with one to make it better but it is a ~$500 project mainly for shits and giggles.
The metal case is a donor from the Chinese brand Cadisen.

Thanks, Bill.
Im new to the "non-AD, online buy" and at this point, more concerned with legitimacy than low price.

I came to ask how the watch people here feel about the new Swatch X AP collaboration. Seems like they are maybe getting ahead of the knockoffs.

I want to know what authority declared AP to be part of the Trinity. The Royal Oak is a hideous watch and their other models are nonentities.

Official AP x Swatch images are out. I bet the scalpers are jumping out of line as we speak

Who can tell me what I'm looking at if I want to get this watch in 36 MILLIMETERS at retail from an AD? Never bought a Rolex.
Is it realistic that I would be able to get one within 12 months? Longer? At all?

Yes. My bad. I don't want a grandfather clock Rolex.

I think under 1 year is possible
Maybe?
Maybe?

If you’re in Baton Rouge, go to the AD Lee Michaels by Town Center, talk to a sales associate and ask to look. They have a beautiful Rolex section.
Make conversation and see. They do want to sell stuff after all.

You can’t get that exact watch in 36mm, but you can get one very similar to it.
ETA: that dial is discontinued and the 36 has double batons at 3 6 9.
No one can realistically answer your question, you may get lucky and get sold one on the spot. They may take your name down and throw it in the trash as soon as you walk out of the door.
