Good luck to them. Compared to Amarillo, it looks pretty attractive. Time will tell though.

If I were moving out of the US, I'd probably go to Mexico.
That's a solid no. Even the tourist areas like Cozumel and Cancun are dangerous. I was there last week and saw military patrols around the resorts.
I've known a couple people who lived in Central America. Unless you live in the highlands, the heat and humidity are unbearable. Everything stays damp. There were armed guards in stores and the entrance to any 'nice' neighborhood. Every house had 10 foot walls with some type of wire on top. Anything you owned would be stolen if it wasn't nailed down.
I would let my kids wander downtown Atlanta alone before I let them out on the strets of a Central American town.

in the jungles of Panama
Almost certainly an exaggeration by the author, who never specified their location. Panama has a number of places for expats to live comfortably, and with security guards. Maybe there is some rainforest nearby but I really doubt they live in it. Panama City is a mess that I would not live in but there are some decent spots on the outskirts, one expat enclave is several hundred feet up a hill that keeps things cooler and it's pretty nice.
Article is misleading, but that's expected for the internet.

Though life looks different, Oberlin says she and her husband love it, and their kids are enjoying exploring their new home, meeting new friends and learning Spanish in school.
So these parents take their 14 year old 12 year old and 10 year old away from their friends and family to a different country where they don’t speak true language and I’m supposed to believe those kids are “happy”?
Fat chance…

Social Media and the 24 hours news cycle likely drove the parents to thinking they had to do this, and uprooted these kids lives and changed them forever.

Amarillo crime rate is pretty high for its size, but I feel like it’s the kinda place where it stays in certain areas.

Lots of Euros and Americans relocate/retire to Central America.

He’s an idiot. Now that he’s advertised his family, he may get some unwanted visitors.

Almost none of the Central American countries have solid property rights laws, especially for outsiders.

Every story you referenced is terrible…but have you researched Latin American crime to compare?
