I don't understand why he was arrested. If you're paranoid about it, confiscate it and get someone to check it out

Same thing happened to me when I was accused by an "anonymous tipster" of something I didn't do. Arrested at school and spent all day being interrogated, harassed, bullied, and threatened by the police. They eventually figured out that it was complete BS, but the experience showed me what cops are REALLY like. I'll never forget that, and never will trust the police again. I feel for this kid because I know exactly what that's like and I wish I could buy him a beer.

I agree the zero-tolerance "let's arrest kids for relatively benign stuff" policies are insane, but that isn't why this is a national story. It's a big story because he is a Muslim, and America takes every chance it gets to prove that it's above profiling.

No, but you would surely ascertain the nature of the device. And probably tell him it was a bad idea to not warn people that he was bringing a bomb-looking device.
The arrest is part of a stupid policy that automatically kicked in once officials believed he might have brought a bomb-like device to school.

Agreed. In hindsight, the engineering teacher should have made him leave the clock in the teacher's classroom until the end of the day, knowing that other teachers seeing it could lead to something like this.

I'm a white, upper middle class male from Texas with zero criminal record.
Unless you've experienced being interrogated, berated, and threatened all day by a pack of cops - as a kid who thought he was just having a regular day at school - then you really don't have any room to speak because you don't know what it's like.
I do.
I'm telling you - it's messed up to do and will turn you against the police.
The right thing to do would be to inspect the object to see if it's really a bomb, and if it isn't, to call the kids parents and tell them "yo, this freaks people out, tell him to knock it off". That's it. No big deal. It's totally unnecessary to arrest the kid and hand him over to a pack of bloodthirsty hyaenas (what cops are, in case you haven't experienced it).

The first thought that popped in my head was precaution from incidents like Columbine and Sandy Hook...and I'm willing to bet that was the underlying motive behind the school and police reactions. The fact he is Muslim is a coincidence and secondary.

Kid may have been messing around or trying to make a political statement about profiling, which is dumb, but not arrest worthy if the teachers knew the device was a clock.
