My mil usually takes my two daughters out on a shopping spree for their birthday (both born in June) and lets them buy whatever they want within reason. That's her birthday present to them. Anyway, a while back after a birthday shopping spree she calls my wife up and ask her if we could cover half the cost of the shopping spree because she went over her budget for the month (Lives off of retirement). I told my wife straight up that we had nothing to do with her going over her budget, it was her plan and if she went over her budget that's her own fault. Mil got mad and yelled at me for instigating, but we didn't pay.

Tell your crazy mother inlaw stories here

Only one.

I have twin boys, and when they were about 2 1/2 years old, just learning how to talk and repeating everything, she was telling this story and kept mentioning the "fat lady."

My wife tells her to stop continually referring to the lady as "fat" in front of our young kids, and in no uncertain terms, she replies and says there's nothing wrong with that word because the lady was indeed fat, and she would continue to say that word in front of our kids if she wanted to.

Mind you, they were on vacation staying at our house. I let her know...also in no uncertain terms...if she ever wanted to see my kids again, she would treat my wife as a mother with respect and whatever my wife says she needs to to in front of our kids is gospel, no matter how absurd she thinks it is. I told her if she didn't like it, I'd help her pack her bags to leave my house, and she wouldn't be invited back and would never see her grandkids again. She didn't take that very well, and in retaliation, did something else really shitty to my wife. My wife had to work the next couple of days, and had originally asked her Mom if she could watch the kids, Mom says yes, wife picks up shifts. After the blow up, she told my wife she was going to stay with a friend those 2 days and wouldn't watch the kids. My wife said she'd probably be fired, and her Mom replied that she didn't care, that was her problem. My schedule is a bit more free, so I had to take 2 PTO days to watch my kids as a result.

Years later, if it were up to me, the relationship would be different right now, as in nonexistent. I am about the least forgiving person I know, probably to a fault. What her Mom did for me was grounds for her to go away and never hear from us again, and never see her grandkids again. The level of disrespect was that bad. But obviously it's my wife's mothers, so they reconciled eventually. But to this day, I just make very small talk with her, and basically just avoid her when she's around. That ship has sailed, and that'll never change, she'll never get my respect back for as long as I'm around.

It was probably the closest I've ever come to punching an old lady.

Mine says "cut" instead of "turn". Cut the light on, cut the volume down. My daughter is starting to do the same thing. Drives me crazy.

She is 81 and just started smoking weed instead of drinking wine every day. A guy in her retirement condo complex turned a bunch of folks on. He's alright in my book!

Yeah, real great guy. You won’t be saying that when they’re all dead within 10 years. Weed always sounds fun in the beginning. That’s how it hooks you.

My sister's MIL lives in the same town as my parents. She avoids coming to see her own family because she feels obligated to put in an appearance at her MIL. Noncompliant diabetic with a touch of dementia, and that's just scratching the surface.

I feel as is I’m always walking on eggshells when talking to my mother in law.

Mother’s Day 2017 my husband and I went over to his parents house and had to hear about how his parents are pissed of at my sister in law. When my husband would gently try to defend his younger sister...his mom flipped out and started yelling at him. When I tried to defend my husband....she tells me “I think I know my son thank you very much”. My cue to shut the frick up at that point.

Now...I just smile and make small talk whenever I see her. Being very careful not to say anything that in her crazy head she could deem hurtful.

umm bull shite the end, we are going to need to know this story.

She had severe alcohol problems to go along with just general craziness. My now wife had cut ties after like 5 or 6 years of dealing with her instability and she was not going to attend the wedding anyway. Somebody went over to visit her and she was dead on the couch.

Pure coincidence that it happened that day, I think. The coroner did not suspect foul play.

I'll never understand why mature adults take that. Your husband should put his mother in her place for talking to you like that.

My MIL started giving my wife shite about random bs, and my wife straight up told her that if she doesn't want to be civil, then they don't need to continue the conversation.

Eh, I’d have a problem with my mom if she ever said something like that to my wife. My MIL and mom are both very non confrontational people, though, so we both got pretty lucky.

MIL called me on the cell phone. "I'm driving and I'm lost, I'm near a Wal-Mart and a Starbucks". I said, "That narrows it down." She didn't understand.

My mother in law has always catered to and enabled my wife’s older sister (obv my SIL) to the point that my SIL cannot think or make decisions for herself and always has a “woe is me” outlook on life and is always waiting for her ship to come in.

My SIL is 37 years old and had trouble conceiving and is obsessed with celebrities versus being involved in real life. She got mad that my wife got pregnant before her and wouldn’t even come visit her nephew or come to his birthday parties or to any large family event with kids around - even Christmas and Thanksgiving. My MIL always makes excuses for her and acts like my wife and I are evil for pointing out how ridiculous my SIL’s antics are. It’s really driven a wedge between my wife and her mom, but we’ve always still allowed her to see our kids and don’t talk bad about my MIL in front of them.

We moved to my wife’s hometown 5 years ago so she could be closer to family, including my MIL, but we’ve now decided it’s time to forget about us having any semblance of a relationship with her and are moving back to the Nashville area in the spring. We haven’t told her yet and plan to just let her figure it out on her own when she sees the for sale sign in our yard.
