Some of these sound awesome! I wish I had some to share. Unfortunately my mother in law is great. When we visit she keeps my favorite beer in the fridge, stocks it when it's low and she refuses to let me help in the kitchen or to pay for dinner when we go out. I've tried to pay in the past but she says that one of the few joys she has left in life is to spend money on her family. I've learned to step aside when she pulls out the purse.

Same here. She is like a second mom to me and sometimes my wife complains that she treats me better than her

My MIL goes so far as to excuse herself from the table and slip the waitress her card to pay before we even order

mine is honestly pretty awesome. Worst thing I can say about her is she is a terrible gift giver and I'm terrible at faking excitement for bad gifts... so that's uncomfortable..other than that i got it pretty damn good

If only true anonymity existed.............. I might not win any trophies in this contest, but the judges would pay attention.

My MIL is awesome, the most selfless person I’ve ever met. She was born into a lot of money but that did not shy her away from 42 year career as an engineer for Shell. She was able to raise a kid and deal with a sick husband while traveling back and fourth from the Netherlands, Saudi to Nola multiple times a year. She has a great sense of humor about the nola Society types as well, which is amusing. I’m very grateful her and I have an amazing relationship and she allowed me to marry her daughter.
I love my mom to death but My wife def got the short end of the stick for an awesome mil.

I've got one for you. Mine wanted to give us a wedding gift. She bought a used bedroom suite for us which was totally fine considering neither one of us had much starting out. A couple of months after the wedding, while I had the flu, I get a call from my wife's cousin, whom the bedroom suite came from, asking me to come over to her house she was trying to sell to do some work since the MIL never paid for the bedroom suite.
She is my wife's mother and I try to respect that as much as possible.

I read some general life advice on kids and grandparents from this very board. One of the things that has stuck with me was never depend on your own parents for favors with the kids such as babysitting etc.
Then there’s always that feeling of something being owed whether it comes from the parent or the grandparent.
I don’t have kids yet, but when I do, there’s an almost 100% chance I’ll be in another state if not another country. So I’m good there

MIL from my first marriage, that bitch is bat shite crazy.
I saw her pull a gun on her long time boyfriend saying he hit her, I was standing right there. He never put a hand on her, raised his voice, nothing. She just flipped out of nowhere.
She kept about $20k in cash hidden under my then girlfriends bed.
Had to pick her up from jail once from a DUI. I was 18, when she got in the car I said something along the lines of her needing to grow up. She flipped out.
Helped her move 3 times and she never once said thank you for the help. She asked me to help her again after that and I told her to find someone else.
She had finally gotten married to a really nice guy that took great care of her, no idea how she pulled that off. He was out of town working, my then wife and I go over and catch a guy sneaking out the back.
She's a raging alcoholic. Her husband tried talking to her about it and wanted to get her help, she left him instead and blamed her drinking on him even though she had been an alcoholic for 20 years at this point.
They get back together for about a year, he had enough of her shite and tells her he wants a divorce. She refuses and won't sign the papers. In that time frame, he had taken a much better paying job in Florida. He kept trying to get her to go through with the divorce and she flat out refused. He moved on with his life.
Well when she figured out that he had moved on with his life, she went and filed for divorce citing that he was cheating on her. She simply couldn't accept that she was the cause of their failed marriage and waited until she could blame it on him.
The woman had a rough life, but she has also brought a lot of it on herself. She was in several long term abusive relationships over the years. The guy she's with now she's been with for probably 8-10 years, my ex said he beats her too. He's a total piece of shite, I'm fairly certain he post here too. But she can't be alone and won't get herself out of bad situations. She won't address her issues, she won't seek help, and she won't take advice.
She loves her kids and her grandkids, but she's a terrible parent and grandparent. My ex said they talk once every 2 or 3 months, it's the same with her son.
Her first marriage was with her childrens father, he's one of the best people you would ever meet and the only reason my ex and her brother grew up to be successful. However, the mom tries to take all the credit.
When we were in high school and dating, her mom would take food from the house to bring to the bar with her leaving her daughter nothing to eat. She wouldn't pay her bills, the daughter would have to go find her moms checkbook and pay the bills for her so utilities wouldn't get shut off.
It was crazy, I was with my ex for 14 years. I saw more crazy over those 14 years than any person should ever have to experience in a lifetime.
I'm remarried now and I can't tell you how much I appreciate my mother in law now after what I had to deal with before. Holy shite, it's relieving just thinking about it.

My mother in law wore "Ivory" (as in "I don't see what the big deal is, it's Ivory not White") to our wedding.
This is tells me nothing.
For everyone that upvoted this, have you never been to a wedding or seen one on TV? You can have the most sane bride ever, but her mother wearing white on her day is bound to ruffle feathers. Wearing white to a wedding is always a typical joke in shows and movies to show that a character is a narcissist.

She is 81 and just started smoking weed instead of drinking wine every day. A guy in her retirement condo complex turned a bunch of folks on. He's alright in my book!
