It certainly opened my eyes. I was a young prep school white collar boy who never really even knew all that shite.
I had five divorces in my platoon of 35 during our deployment. Some were Jody, some were wives who were just burned out after a second or third long combat deployment, some were too young, etc.
I went overseas intentionally single and broke a heart or two because of it. I did not want to be having to worry about any of that with lead flying.

My first wife ditched our two year old at her parents house and moved halfway across the country with some guy while I was overseas.
When I finally got home and we went to court and I sued for both divorce and custody (because she had done neither) she suddenly claimed that I had beaten her the day before I shipped out and so that's why she left our kid at her parents house and moved into some other guys' house halfway across the country, and now she wanted custody (and by the way child support ) Oops the day she claimed I beat her was a week after I had already shipped out, and there was zero evidence that I had ever hit her anyway, primarily because I hadn't ever hit her.
I got a divorce and custody, and haven't seen her since that day, along with no child support and certainly not even so much as a birthday card for our son or anything in all the intervening years. When he turned 14 I hired a PI to hire her , make sure she was a live and get contact info in case he wanted to talk to his mother, which meant the PI contacted her and gave her our contact info (as if she didn't know how to contact me ) son said thanks but no thanks, she never made an effort.

Thought I recall several military folks on here detailing financial wastes associated with simply getting married as a military member like they didnt fully need the compensation.

There's a decent sized lake in my home town that had been drawn down, worked on, and restocked. Fishing had been closed while the work was done and lake level could get back to normal. It was advertised that fishing could re-open on such and such Saturday at first light, and there would be a gunshot to ring it in.
Everyone launches their boats and is waiting to hear the shot before the sun comes up very well. They hear a shot and start fishing. Bout 15 mins they hear another shot.
Turns out that morning a well known local judge who lived on the lake had caught an earlier flight back. The first shot was his, shooting Jody and his wife while he was on top of her.

A childhood friend of mine had Jody problems with his first wife during his first deployment. That relationship ended and he's been re-married for 12 years to a much prettier woman. He seems happy.
Man, I remember getting some depressing emails from him while he was out at sea. He had his suspicions but I had to break the news to him when I ran into his then-wife and Jody sucking face at the mall.

When me and my girlfriend broke up, the cute girl at work started coming on to me hard. I was newly single, so I was like "frick yeah."
When I found out she had a boyfriend overseas (Army I believe) I broke it off real quick.
"Bitch, I ain't no Jody."
I've never served, but I have too many friends and family members in the military to not know who Jody is.
