What year did the trace open up? I think it was like 94/95. It use to be train tracks.

I remember when they tore the tracks up when building the trace through Abita. The railroad ties were stacked to the side, and when bored my cousin and I knocked the railroad spikes out of them. I still have a few somewhere in the garage. If some of the old timers can confirm another story my old man told me, it would be great. He said that during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, trains were passing through Abita loaded with tanks, artillery, and vehicles apparently headed to someplace in Florida on a regular basis.

There was a movie theater in Mandeville by the DMV

And an absolute shithole at that.

That place was a big deal when it was built and was the beginning of the end for the Star Theatre in Covington. The Star used to have a single screen and was an old school theatre with a balcony, probably used for segregation but that's just a guess. They had one double seat in the Star reserved for Dr. Ketty, an obese dermatologist. Everyone knew that you didn't sit in that chair and everyone respected that. After a movie was over, you'd use the pay phone by the courthouse to let your parents know they could pick you up. To kill time until they arrived, you could yell at the prisoners who were locked up in the jail on the second floor of the courthouse. Ha ha!

When I-12 opened, it made it a lot easier to get from the west Covington area to Mandeville. A lot of the people who used to go to the Star went to the new theater because it had more screens and a bigger selection of movies. I remember that Jaws didn't play at the Star until the summer after it was released. They split the Star into 2 screens but it was never the same.

Every year right after school let out, the Star would show The Legend of Boggy Creek. We'd spend a lot of time in the woods during the summer so it would scare us for the rest of the summer.

I played quite a few rounds at Pretty Acres. My friend had some chic wak out of the woods butt-naked on the long par 5. She said she had been abducted. Crazy stuff. As for land grants, Sharps, Cores, and Spells are families that I can recall having lots of land. If I was told correctly, most of the large landholders can trace their roots back to a small British detachment in either the Revolutionary War or the War of 1812. The story is that some of the soldiers liked the area so much that they stayed. I don't know how true it is but I know that most of these families associated with the story owned thousands of acres at some point.

Tchefuncte River and the War of 1812

Also, for those from the area who are interested in Civil War history, many folks from St. Tammany and Washington Parishes (Tangipahoa Parish was not yet created) were in the 9th Louisiana Infantry.

Check this list. Some of you may recognized some names. Two of my great, great uncles are on this roster.

Old timers use to take the train to old Milneburg and take the ferry over to the northshore for the weekend to get away. People would go spend a season or so up there when they would get in poor health thinking the northshore would help them regain their health.

McDonalds was the only fast food game in town on Claiborne Hill...It was a big deal when Wendys opened.

Old Landing was the place to drink Miller Ponys after school. Lot's of good memories made there.

We use to "borrow" the Roy Moutons van during school hours and take it to the donut shop on S Tyler and 8th. Can't remember the name of that place.

Played my first round of golf at Louis Prima...never any good at that damn game.

There was a high school frat that had keg parties out off of Airport rd...and other places. Got my daddys caddy stuck in a ditch one night and had to confess to get the tow truck to get it out after one of those late nights.

There use to be some damn cute girls that lived in Flower Estates...or De-Flower Estates as it was named.

For the civil war buffs...My great, great, grand uncle was Lt. Dixon that was the captain of the Hunley. We're originally from Charleston, SC.

Fun Fact:
My dad was followed by him and Vaccaro right before they kidnapped the girl they eventually murdered. He was in Franklinton at the time and Robert had tried several times to get my dad to pull over for reasons he does not know to this day. My dad pulled into the diner in town as he was meeting a friend there for some food. His buddy was outside when they pulled in, Willie and Vaccaro pulled in right after jumping out the truck trying to start a fight. They tussled back n forth for a minute or so till some cops pulled in. They broke it up and Willie and Vaccaro drove off. Later that day is the day they kidnapped the girl.
My old man has only spoken of this once to my knowledge and it was only after I was talking about the Dead Man Walking movie they filmed parts of in Madisonville. He feels some amount of guilt because he didnt have the cops detain Willie and Vaccaro that day.

Sonic, Hearty Burger, and Danny's Fried Chicken pre-dated McDonald's. When Wendy's was planning to open, classmates of mine who got hired to work there had to drive the Causeway after school to work at the one on Causeway Blvd in Metairie to get training.

I was in the same class as the girl who was kidnapped and also knew her younger brother. Such a nice girl to have been impacted by such evil people. No compassion for what they did to her and her boyfriend.
