People would go spend a season or so up there when they would get in poor health thinking the northshore would help them regain their health.
The hotel owners in Mandeville and Abita during the 20's-40's promoted the lie that the spring water and "unnatural amount of ozone" in the air in St. Tammany would cure any disease. Hot Springs, AR pulled the same scam. Of course, this was a time when doctors would endorse cigarettes as being healthy.

This thread needs pictures of former things like Pretty Acres.

I moved here a bit ago from NOLA thinking I was getting away from overpriced land, ignorance, corruption and police harassment.
Boy was I wrong!

People don't know how to drive over a fricking river overpass on I12

THIS! It is the strangest traffic phenomenon I have ever seen. It's like there is some invisible force that slows the cars to 15mph on the upslope of that bridge.
That weird and aggravating shite happens on the Highrise in the East too. At least the Highrise drivers kind of have an excuse since the steepness of it requires a downshift for many cars. Theres no excuse for that shite on I-12 at Tchefuncta.

There was a high school frat that had keg parties out off of Airport rd...and other places.
There were a bunch of high school (St. Paul) kids who used to go onto some family property back in the early '80's and have keg/beer parties. There was an old, abandoned, house where they'd hang out, plus a nice sandy beach in a bend on the Tchefuncte where they would swim. We really had no problem with them doing this, but many times the area and river would be littered with empty beer cans.

some of the old timers can confirm another story my old man told me, it would be great. He said that during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, trains were passing through Abita loaded with tanks, artillery, and vehicles apparently headed to someplace in Florida on a regular basis.
There's much allegation that CIA-backed group(s) trained for an invasion of Cuba in the Lacombe area during those days.

Did some google foo and found out Lee Harvey Oswald lived at 311 N. Vermont St. in Covington in 1946. It was only a couple of blocks out of the way home from work so I checked it out this afternoon. There is no 311 anymore that I saw; it jumped from 305 to 321. Anyway, it's just around the corner from St. Scholastica and Aquistipace.

She seems like an extraordinary person with how she handled it and then after, even now present day.

She wrote a book called "Forgiving the Dead Man Walking". It's terrifying what she and her boyfriend went though. There was no reason for Willie not to kill her too. He killed Faith Hathaway a week early and thought he killed her boyfriend a day or two before, but she managed to talk him into letting her go. Brave, resilient girl.
Mike Varnado also wrote a book about Willie. He isn't as charitable as Debbie Cuevas Morris is.

Is the Gibson Street Bar still around? I used to go there to drink Abita Beer with my cousin before you could get it in Baton Rouge.

Used to get liquor from Mason-Nez as a 16 year old. Not all the time but here and there.
Good friends with the family that owned Tugy's, specially the younger sons. Spent many good nights there.

Yes I was reading some of the stories on all that. I never knew some of the details, like that they were abducted at the Madisonville riverfront or that Hathaway was killed and dumped at Fricke's cave, where I used to fish and camp as a kid (years after that happened).
