Hard to be wrong on a question
No judgement on not drinking! I guess your son is growing up in an area with people around him that don't drink much either. Just a different world.
Soft drinks though - crazy he has never had a Sprite or Ginger Ale and he's 15. But they're not good for you, so I guess that's awesome.

He won't even touch my empty coke cans when I ask him to throw them away. "No dad. You drank it you can throw it away..."

Illegal detainment at the very least.
Probably not. It appears that both teens committed crimes while inside the car. California allows citizens' arrest. I will assume that a human made the call to stop the car and call police. If not it might be a novel use of the law and have to be interpreted by the court. If a human did make the decision, it would be analogous to loss prevention locking someone in a store vestibule remotely if they observe a crime committed in the store. There are a couple of words in the CA penal code that need interpreting and likely have been, but I didn't bother to look up any relevant cases.

How does this work on a hot day when the police may not show up for an hour or two?
Waymo has cameras in the car that are viewed by people. This wasn't the car figuring out what they were doing. Their movements sent an alert to someone who stoped the car and locked it. That same person could have unlocked the car or tuned on the AC etc.

conflicting info in the article, but i think/hope this is more accurate:
"Waymo shared the car’s location with authorities and remotely disabled it, telling the teens that the vehicle was experiencing mechanical issues, KNTV reported.
After the vehicle arrived at the parking lot, five officers were waiting, KRON reported.
“We conducted a high-risk traffic stop,” Luna told the television station. “Waymo did disable the vehicle for us in a location that we were able to set up safely."
meaning, the car brought them to a parking lot where the police were already waiting for them. it did NOT just lock them in the car and wait for the police to show up.

What happens when the government can send the Waymo robot to grab me? Not sure I love this.
Fewer police officers get shot serving warrants?

Send same Waymo to teen’s parents for a ride to town center for their flogging. They failed and owe society.
Too Orwellian for me. Waymo moves people to / from. It is not an enforcer of anything. It can alert authorities, but locking down is over stepping these little jack asses’ rights, I think.
That said, the little jack asses need an arse whipping.

Kids drinking at 15? My son is this same age. He's never even had a soft drink, much less had the desire to drink alcohol. So many questions.....
Is he 15 months?

That prompted Waymo to remotely halt the vehicle and lock the doors
I’m interested to know the laws on this aspect. This sounds like an unlawful detention and an incoming lawsuit. I’m sure their terms have some verbiage in this but it also sounds like this will be tested in court soon.

No. He's just not a degenerate.
People on this board complain about "kids" and this new generation all the time. I post about a, in my biased opinion, a good one (a kid that made Eagle Scout at 13.5) , and folks rip the post to shreds.
It's like they can't stand or want to admit to their own short comings and pull the old DV trigger....

Sgt Esterhaus played by Michael Conrad on Hill Street Blues was a great example of the kind of police personnel who would have written that description.
One of my favorite characters.
Let's be careful out there."

I find it hard to believe there's no way to physically unlock the doors of the car. Why would that even be a feature? What is the purpose?

We are literally living in a sci-fi movie already and nobody even realizes it

Is this because you want to resist arrest and prefer resisting a vulnerable human that is more likely to make worse split second decisions?
