I couldn't imagine buying a new car for a 16 year old. If anything, I'd by myself a new car and then give them my old car, or just buy them a safe beater. That car will be totaled before she turns 18.

$350 a month. WTF? Obviously I am going to shop this around

Good luck. You may find somewhere to save a few bucks, but that's about it. I went through this 4 years ago and was in shock just like you.

I pay 400 a month for my teenager (18 years old now). It’s stupid expensive and she drives a 2007 Honda Accord. Nothing fancy.

And yeh I wouldn’t buy a new car. Hell my kid got into a fender bender within the first 3 months of her driving. Thank god she had accident forgiveness.

$350 Is actually a pretty damn good quote. It was $225 per month just for my son and his seven-year-old civic.

Also you are a damn fool for buying your daughter, a brand new car.

The agreement I had with my kid was that I would buy him a used vehicle and he would pay the insurance. It incentivized him to maintain a job and earn his way. It worked out beautifully as the kid is now paying his way through college and has a nifty savings as well.

Got her a Toyota Rav4 in the most basic configuration. A $25k car.

My parents spent $6500 in 2001 for me and my friends thought we were loaded.

Why buy new when they just going to tear it up in accidents?

Buying a new SUV for a 16 year-old.

Dumb.

Shoulda found a eight year-old ES350.

Here's a link to a '12 EStreefiddy with 94k miles at $12k from Price LeBlanc Lexus

OP is an Ole Miss fan, didn't price the insurance until after buying the car.

Typical.

Damn, I'm nowhere close to having a kid but I'll be buying them a moped if insurance rates are this high in 20 years

My daughter, no pics, added about $260 per month, without her own car with Geico.

Try USAA. If you can. I'm paying 657 monthly on 4 vehicles.

You can't just TRY USAA. You have to be military to be with USAA, or a child of a military parent. My dad was military, so I've been with them my whole life. And yes, it is great coverage, customer service, etc. at a very good cost. They even cut dividend checks to customers yearly. But we still paid around $300 a month for full coverage on a used vehicle for our 16 year old.

My parents made me fork over the car insurance money every month when I turned 16, and the deal was that they would buy a used car of their choice. If I missed a month, I'd lose the keys for a month.

Amazing what not spoiling your kids with new cars can accomplish.

I have no clue how my parents did it, but they had 5 kids aged 15 thru 25 on their insurance.

All of us had our own new cars too( 2 Jeep Wranglers, an F150, a Miata, and a Acura Integra)

The cars + insurance,+ private school tuition and college = holy crap.

ETA: For the record, only one of us got into an accident that wasn't her fault.. of course, we didn't have smartphones back then, but we did get to go to bars and drink a lot more easily so I guess it evens out. Teach your kids to be good drivers.

Quoted a client in 01-02 that did same but 5.0 mustang and it was $650/month. Of course the client blamed me for the premium being more that his note. You better figure out how many ice chest it’s going to take to cover that premium.

Go to the online insurance websites and try entering you as the primary driver for the Toyota and your daughter as primary for the truck.

Do you have additional vehicles besides those two?

I have an 8yr old girl and a 6yr old boy. There's no way in hell they'll be getting any vehicle newer than 7 or 8 yrs old. I'll buy it for them, but they will get a job and buy insurance or put in the equivalent time into extracurricular activities at school and I'll cover it.

I cannot fathom buying a 16 yr old a brand new car.

Some will disagree with me but I will not buy my kid a car in high school or college. Not paying for that nonsense or taking on that crazy note.

They will get an Uber account and they can kiss my butt if that don’t work.

I didn’t have a car in college back in the day before smart phones. I bummed rides and crap my entire college experience.

Why? Because I totaled out two cars my dad bought me in high school.

At least with Uber, I can track where they go and they get some low risk freedom to me. And I don’t have to shell out $600+ a month on car notes and insurance.
