My dad quit teaching because of this type of stuff. His final straw was discipline. Had a bad student who he continually sent to the office. Office refused to do anything because there was a policy not to suspend or expel kids. No expulsions means higher scores for the school. Keep the pieces of shite around and push them through to make it look like you fixed the problems.

Pathetic.

My wife is a teacher. When we were dating, we had plans to go out after her last day of teaching summer school in 1998. She got a call from an irate parent who just learned that her little moron flunked her class.

My wife explained that the little moron slept every day in class and never turned in a single piece of work, so he got a ZERO for the class. Moron's mom then tells my wife that she knows the principal and the superintendent.

Wife tells her call them, but the grade is what it is. About ten minutes later, the principal calls and say since the parent paid the $300 for the summer session that they changed the grade to a "D" so little moron can move up a grade. Unbelievable.

Not everything is about liberals. I would bet this is a school trying to keep their graduation rate up.

and rules like this are why most of these kids/young adults/adults are being set up to fail long term

do nothing - 50%
do nothing and cry - 70-75%
do a little and cry - 85%
work your arse off and earn the grade quietly - 85-100%

Bad part is the kids are learning that the people in control (I.e. the government) will always be there to prop them up. That there are no consequences for their actions.

She was fired because she didn't follow the rules. You don't have to like the rules, but you do have to follow them. I'd have fired her arse, too.

Teachers have it so hard. The kids being pumped out by tax backed bad breeding are worthless.

Absolutely. School looks better, principal keeps job and gets bonuses, etc etc.

School boards are employment agencies. Educating kids is a secondary mission.

This.

It's strikingly similar to welfare.

Sit at home and do nothing, get a livable wage.

Bust your arse in a minimum wage job, maybe get 20% more pay.

It's grade welfare.

Newsflash. EBR has same policy.

The high schools do anyway.

This is absolutely the reasoning behind the policy.

When was the 50% rule implemented? I have never heard of this.

I just looked at the handbook. The policy says students get an I grade for incomplete and the score is a zero for that assignment.

There are no zeros for F grades.

It's also worth noting the handbook uses improper English - "zero's" should be "zeros."

Methinks the teacher was probably fired for something that stemmed from this policy.

Why would you get 50% for handing nothing in? Is it possible to go below 50%?

That's when society started to crumble.
