I've worked in two different parishes that had this rule if a student did not turn in an assignment or scored under 50% you gave them 50%.

It is not fair to those students who are working their arse off but still struggling because someone who is not doing a damn thing has the same score as them.

Also, it is not easy for students to make it up, mainly because many areas require at least two grades a week so if a student is only doing 50% then the last three to four weeks they have to make perfect scores to pull that up.
