re: Teacher says she was fired for giving zeroes to students who didn't turn in their work

She had sent emails that went unanswered. Parents never gave a crap until little moron was about to be held back.
The bigger issue is that kids are being shuffled along regardless of whether they are ready.
A lot has to do with "No Child Left Behind." On paper, it seems like a good idea to link funding to school performance, but that's only if the school administrators are honest.
Instead what we have are schools that promote kids who should be held back in order to make the school's performance look better than it is. It is truly pathetic.
Teachers, like everyone else, then complain long and loud that kids are graduating high school without knowing how to read or do simple math.

That article deserves its own thread.
It summarizes some extremely damning information.

Our education system is busted. It's not about money, we outspend virtually everyone else in the world.

There are things worth standing up for, ensuring people are held responsible for their own actions is something worth standing up for. Imagine if you were the kid that legitimately tried but just for whatever reason couldn’t pass the class and little Jimmy over there hasn’t shown up in weeks and y’all get almost the same grades on each assignment no matter the fact that you were at least present and attentive in class while he was never there.
That’s a shitty precedent to set.

It’s not hard to go from a 50 to a 60
The fact the 60% is a passing score is a bit of a head scratcher for those of us who grew up with 70% being the lowest D possible.

Well I would be long gone if that were the case here.

Never heard of D being a 70.
A=90-100
B=80-89
C=70-79
D=60-69
A=90-100
B=80-89
C=70-79
D=60-69

In some places 92-100 A
84-92 B
76-84 C
68-76 D

The policy isn't really ridiculous if you think about it. Take a 10-point grading scale, for example.
Obviously, there are 10 points between grades, with a 50 being an F. Why is there a floor of 50 points just for the F? If a student doesn't turn in work, receiving a 50 is still a failing grade. To some, a 0 seems punitive and destroys the student's grade. In such a case, if a student were to earn 2 Cs (70) and 1 F (0) and fail the class, would that be considered reflective of the student's entire body of work?
I can see both sides of the argument.
The grading scale has alot to do with it, you're correct.
No one has a problem with 4 point grading scales and a zero for an F, but that scale allows a 0 to be easily overcome.
When you out it on a 100 point scale, it's nearly impossible depending on the weighting.

I said yesterday I doubt she was fired for just the zeroes thing.

My parents would’ve been mad if I didn’t turn anything in and still got 50%.

Were those places public schools. It isn’t relevant if not.

Public school in Pulaski county school district (central Ark.) back in the 70s and 80s had a grading structure like this:
93-100 = A
85-92 = B
77-84 = C
70-76 = D
69 or less = F
