Florida isn’t the only state that does this. Total crap. I received 0s for late work or I would get an Incomplete as my final grade

When was the 50% rule implemented?

When tests stopped being the major part of the grade...

This is circle ourboros...

Tests have been reduced to 25% of a grade because they don't want kids to fail...
So teachers generate tons of homework and projects for kids that count as 50% of the grade...
Which children don't won't or cannot complete daily due to life and shite...
Causing kids to fail...
So to fix that, they generate this min-50% crap.

Last year my kid had a 96% test score average...
Missed 2 homework assignments (no make-ups allowed) and walked out with a C...because the homework average was greater weight than the tests

It doesn't though. The kid getting zeroes that turn into 50% is going to get something for nothing once he drops out and starts collecting welfare.

If she really wants to get technical about grading procedures, teachers are not supposed to give grades/points toward anything that is not a quiz/test that assesses the students direct knowledge of the curriculum as it's being taught. This includes homework and class projects.

FWIW, this is the argument in favor of a no-zero's policy.

Getting zeros on a HW assignment can torpedo your grade, but your kid obviously has a better understanding of the coursework than the grade indicates.

Been that way at the 3 school districts I've been in. I don't agree with it but that's what they all want.

Make school free and optional. Offer trade school options. If you do make it a requirement, top it out at 16. Regardless of how many laws you make, some people will never care for learning.

I'm not...it's a matter of fact story.
No excuses made.

It earned him ten bucks, he was pissed.
All A,B,C = $10
All A, B= $100
All As= $1000

Because that's how it is in the real world

I don't have a ton of sympathy for the teacher here. This policy is very easy to work around. If she didn't understand the policy, that's on her.

Yeah he's a bright kid that is unorganized and we frequently have to check his crap(assignments/grades) in all the school apps

This is an easy fix

Homework not turned in on Monday = 10/20

Test on Friday = 80/100
Deduction for homework not turned in on Monday = -10
Adjusted test score = 70/100

The theory fo a floor grade has popped in and out of education theory for 40 years, but the last 10 it has really caught on. The theory says that if students receive multiple zeroes and have no chance to pass, then they completely give up and it leads to dropout.

For example. Kayla has five grades in a term, that all count equally. To earn a passing grade, she needs 300 total points. To earn a C, she needs 350, etc.

Educational theory says that Kayla has so much to do and she has to support her brothers and sisters and she fails to turn in the first three assignments (ignoring the fact that Kayla is likely lazy). Because she earns a 0, she has no chance to pass as the maximum number of points she can earn is 200.

But, if you magically give Kayla a floor grade of 50 on her first three papers, in which she did no work on, she only has to make a C on the final two papers to pass. And if she were to work a little harder and earn perfect grades, she has a chance for a C.

Like most educational theory, its complete shite when put into practice. I wouldn't call floor grading widespread, but it is fairly common practice, especially in schools with high dropout rates.

Now ask me about re-testing policies in these same schools. Students can take the same test up to 4 or 5 times until they get an acceptable grade.

The crazy thing is in some schools you get 50% for turning in nothing but another kid can turn in the graded home work assignments and miss numerous parts of the home work and make below a 50% even though he or she actually attempted to do the assignment.

I wasn't aware of this no-zero policy, but after reading about it, there are some valid reasons it is used.

The biggest argument in favor of no-zeros is the fact that zeros are often used in place of discipline, a tactic that shows no real benefit academically. There are more effective ways to correct bad habits than giving someone a zero, but a zero is an easy out for an educator.

You also have to ask yourself what grades are supposed to measure. An "A" in American History shouldn't be earned because you worked hard on your HW assignments, it should be because you have an excellent grasp of the material.

I understand the gripes about a policy like this, but I'm just pointing out a few of the arguments in its favor.

We are very specifically told over and over again that we can not fail kids based off of grades alone. “In order for a student to be retained, there must be over whelming evidence to support the retention. This evidence can not be based solely on their grades”
