Shouldn’t they just convert to a non-profit homeless center at this point?

Sounds like typical corporate BS.

Average retail shrinkage (theft) is 1.44% nationally.

Target sold $109.1 billion last year.

So Target's $1.1 billion in losses is better than average.

Not really surprising when you essentially stop prosecuting theft in many cases

Yep, some of this is organized crime. Modern day piracy. You can steal a limited amount in every store, sell to your fence and make a living.

The Fence sells stuff on Ebay or other outlets for massive profit.

You stated over a billion in theft. Your quote clearly says over a billion in profits. There's a large difference between the two. It takes a lot more than a billion in sales to generate a billion in profits.

Not sure the context of the conversation between you two, but I can almost guarantee that Target doesn't give a shite about "sales" or "theft". They only care about "profit". And if they're losing over a billion dollars in profit, that's gonna wake everyone up.

Were they stealing the bikini bottoms specifically made for "little girls" to be able to tuck their penises in? Target is selling those, fyi.

frick it, I don't even feel bad if they get looted and burned anymore.

Hell, we could sack one like the barbarians sacking Rome. Could be fun.

They are closing the stores that are way worse than the average. Makes sense to me from a business perspective.

Eventually crime will cause enough issues for these big companies that they will shift their focus from ESG to crime prevention and mitigation. We’re seeing cracks in the foundation now. I applaud these companies closing stores due to crime

The point was that the actual monetary value of stolen items is even bigger than over a billion dollars. Every item has cost+overhead+profit built into the price.

Right, but from the corporate POV they don't care about anything but the profit reported to shareholders. So it doesn't matter it it's a trillion dollars in revenue, if it doesn't affect the profit on the back end, who cares.

Quibbling over whether it was a billion in theft or a billion in profit doesn't matter because the only thing that matters is the profit. Which was clearly stated in the article: $1.1 Billion in profit is walking out the door this year.

At first, I thought this, but in reality, there are stores that are probably way over that 1.44% and will eventually raise the overall number if left open. I'm sure their insurers are putting pressure on them.

A higher-up at Walmart told me years ago that around 2% of their products walk out the door, "fall off a truck", or "go missing in the stock room."
