And let's add, a majority of the kids are doing their home work on school issued tablets, so there is really no need to worry about them being gone, they can get all of the class shite emailed to them and work done, before they hit hour 9 of the 15 hour drive

New flash, doesn't matter if you go to Disney World in January, April, July or October, it's going to be crowded as frick.

Yeah that’s not remotely accurate. It will be crowded compared to being empty but I’ve been when the popular rides are 30 mins and I’ve been when they’re 120 mins. It’s like a completely different place.

The whole point of homework is to reinforce what they are learning in school, right? What about that work?

I do it every year

I’m a teacher and I don’t care as long as the parents are the type who are actually involved in their kids education and will make sure they do the work they missed. You would be absolutely shocked at what a small percentage of parents that is.

I dont have kids but if i did, i’d take them out of school for vacations as much as humanly possible without them flunking out.. Why? Because if you’ve ever tried to go on vacation at holidays, like the beach at 4th of July, or Disney World at Easter break or Mardi Gras- it isn’t a vacation at all... It’s a nightmare of lines and traffic and hassles... Total amateur hour stuff.. i’d want to teach my kids how to think beyond the box a little, and create a vacation they’ll actually enjoy, during non-peak times.

It’s like the line in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, when Cameron says, while sitting at a Cubs game on a beautiful weekday afternoon (paraphrasing): “Ferris, do you realize that if we played by the rules- right now we’d be in gym class?”

Last Wednesday, I pulled my son from class, we headed north to the upper peninsula of Michigan for 2.5 days of grouse and woodcock hunting. He saw the leaves changing, stayed just off of Lake Superior in a cabin. We saw a total of 3 great lakes, he killed grouse and woodcock and met some great people. He watched our puppy point it's first wild bird. We made a quick stop at a national park and he got a stamp for his national park passport. 3117 miles total driven and he missed 3 days of school. He is an A student, no regrets.

We did this when our kids were in daycare. Also going on a trip with just my wife was excellent during the school year. We’d take an anniversary trip every year and school was still going on. Nothing but young couples and retirees at the beach. No loud kids or teenagers there. It was great.

Some friends of mine took their kids out of school twice last year for a week each time for family vacations. I find it odd.

My dad told my brothers and I as kids that the only reasons you should ever miss school or work is:

• Fishing: perfect tides, weather conditions
• Hunting: full rut, perfect weather
• Funerals

He was serious about it too. Even if you were sick and not vomiting or running a dangerously high fever, he still expected us to be at school.

We always had great attendance but every year during the rut he’d take us out of school for several days. During late spring when the bigger specks started showing around the island (Grand Isle) he’d take us out of school a few days and head to the camp and fish.

Should be a regular occurrence until HS.

LOL at anyone who thinks they will miss anything of value up to the 8th grade or that it matters to make As and Bs.

High school is where grades start to matter to get $$$.

Always took them out of school for Disney vacations, even into high school.

Screw all the summer and holiday crowds. Saved time and money. Probably should have done it more often than I did.

School, esp elementary, is not that serious. Take that vacation and make memories and have experiences. There’s nothing the kid will miss during those few days in fourth grade that’ll impact his life whatsoever.

I’ll do a half a day on Friday if my kids have Monday off.

Someone from the school office walked into my classroom about 11:30 one Friday and said “your father is here to take you to your dr’s appt.”

I said I don’t have a dr’s appt.

Walked out, got in the old mans car and he said “son, I come get you for a dr’s appt. you better start coughing.”

He would get me out of school about one Friday a month and take me to lunch. Loved doing that.

He would take one or two of his kids on business conferences once or twice a year for 2-3 days and we always rotated. Took us all to Europe for the month of December 1974. School was just fine with it.

If the grades are strong and it's not for an extended time, go for it.

It’s actually excused absences of it can be classified as “Educational” and it doesn’t take much to do so.
