We can have another discussion on subsidies on another day but subsidies were reformed in the 2014 farm bill.

Sugar hadn’t been subsided in over 40 something years if my memory serves me.

As far as what is a sugar ... what is sucrose? HFCS isn’t sucrose.

The public would realize how bad other sweeteners really are and turn back to traditional sugar. Look at Coke, Zero sugar ... aspartame. Traditional coke, HFCS. Diet Coke, not sugar.

Agreed.

While sugar isn’t great for you, it can be ok in moderation.. Aspartame, on the other hand, is one of the worst substances you can consume... The ‘new tobacco’ isn’t sugar- it IS aspartame... in the next couple decades, expect Diet Coke, Equal[tm], chewing gum and other products to have giant warning labels like cigarettes have now.

Banning sugar is not the answer but banning people from buying it with food stamps or Snap is definitely a good idea.

Sadly the big food and big grocery lobbies would never allow it

Where do people get this from? Aspartame is totally safe.

I'm drinking 3-4 carbonated soft drinks a day, sugar and HFCS sweetened, none of that fake sweet mess. I weigh exactly the same today at age 55 as when I graduated HS at 17. Wear the same size jeans too.

Since Dad died and I am taking care of Mom on her schedule I eat 3 squares a day plus coffee and cake around 2pm and a bedtime snack around 10:30pm. Caloricly (calorically?) I am consuming more than my bachelors schedule of 1 big meal/day and a pot of coffee then maybe 1-2 carbonated or booze drinks. Bachelors diet=gain weight, Mom's daily grazing = lose weight.

The only soft drink I’ll consume these days.
I know I’m a little biased but it taste better to me.

A personal favorite, a little raw sugar with Cafe du Monde coffee and a dash of whole milk. Changes the morning wake up routine.

Not moving much is the problem, not what you eat.

If you say Aspartame makes us fat, you need to show us the data. Randomized controlled trials are the gold standard and the ones done thus far show no such thing. And the meta-analyses done on these RCT's support the conclusion that aspartame has no effect on diabetes, blood triglycerides or obesity.

Where in my post did i say that aspartame makes us fat? I said it’s DANGEROUS.

If just getting fat was the worst result of aspartame, it’d be fine.. but it causes a whole host of issues, i’m not going to go into it here and start listing everything, because a very rudimentary Google search on aspartame effects will show you loads of info.. info on all sides of the issue, so you can educate yourself.

I personally have suffered neurological issues for years that started at a time when something called ‘Sugar Busters’ was popular (i’m dating myself) and i attempted to remove all sugar from my diet and introduced tons of aspartame.. Through process of elimination, it’s been determined that aspartame was *most likely* the culprit, though not 100%.. but plenty of other people have had far more adverse effects than i’ve had, so i encourage you to do some research, if you’re so inclined.

The evidence supports calories in and out. There is no evidence that low carb itself has any effect on weight loss. People who eat low carb are simply eating less calories. If you remove the bun from your burger, you are eating less calories. It's not like the meat is somehow a magic weight loss formula.

Gary Taubes is a huge low carb guy and even setup his own foundation to do scientific research. His first major study showed there was NO difference in the low carb group with the high carb group in weight lost (and these people had their meals weighed out and fed to them in a supervised, controlled setting). His study showed that it was calories that mattered, not macros. After the study came out, his foundation folded over embarrassment.

It might be true, however, that eating carbs is a vicious cycle where one remains hungry or craves more calories. That is a distinct possibility and should be looked into. It could be that certain sweeteners are fricking with our hunger hormones (like leptin).

I am a big "it's our environment" guy. I think endocrine disruptors in our environment (especially in plastic) are fricking with our metabolism and we're not burning calories as efficiently as we used to. Combine that with the fact we're eating more and moving less anyway and it's a recipe for disaster.

Is it your contention, then, that if you and I both eat an Oreo our bodies process it the exact same way?

Or more obviously, how do you explain why it’s easier to be skinny in your 20s than in your 40s? I can’t imagine what I’d look like these days if I ate Canes like I did back in college. But according to calories in/calories out, there shouldn’t be any difference.

Anyway, point is that’s it’s demonstrably incorrect. Not even an argument.

It’s overpowering

This. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with pure cane sugar - it’s by far the best sweetener available.
