Actually I agree that the sugar hate is is largely overblown. So is the artificial sweetener hysteria.

Sugar, especially shite-arse industrial level cane sugar, destroys your body on many levels.

And it does make you fat.

Most anyone who's consuming large amounts of sugar like this IS FOR SURE ALSO EATING OTHER STUPID shite and eating excess calories.

Quit avoiding the internal crisis of the fact you shouldn't be eating much cane sugar.

Refined sugars in excess are costing people their lives every day and costing all of us billions in health care costs.

Eat more fruit people.

Yep.

Fruit. And when baking opt for things like coconut sugar and other low glycemic options.

No, eating too much does. Of anything. If you are in a caloric deficit and eat sugar you won't get fat.

That said, it is much easier to eat too much if you're eating hyperpalatable foods that contain a mixture of fats, sugars, and salts. A diet high in sugar and poorly sourced fats is also a ticket to many health issues.

HFCS and artificial sweeteners are in everything.

Look at Coke, Zero sugar ... aspartame. Traditional coke, HFCS.
Diet Coke, not sugar.

All sweeteners, not sugars.

HFCS is indeed a sugar chemically speaking, it is an "additive", it is a sweetener but it is still one of the basic easily metabolizable sugars (sucrose, lactose, fructose, maltose, and glucose).

The underlying problem with obesity is the social engineering the government does with foodstuffs. They highly subsidize the crops used to make the least healthy foods which makes them the cheapest per calorie at the retail level.

I think you have it backwards. For example, corn is highly subsidized but it was never subsidized to specifically make unhealthy food.. companies found a way to use corn to lessen cost because it's so cheap because it is subsidized. I'm terms of $/calorie it's a fantastic achievement, unfortunately it also means that calories are overly available and we're all getting fat.

Wrong. It’s corn, or in particular HFCS

That point is excessively dense and misinformed.

Sadly I think it's a somewhat common misconception, and even more saddening it's an example of a v v serious intellectual epidemic.

The calories from sugar, if you're not eating too much, won't make you gain weight.

Seems simple enough. Makes sense. It all checks out.

But there's quite a bit more to it.

1) People aren't just eating sugar out of the bag, it's virtually always in products that are already high in calories.

2) It impacts hormone levels bc of effect on blood sugar, which causes many problems, hormonal weight gain being one fo them. HUGE topic here.

3) Sugar is a short term fix for hunger, unlike actual fat. So if you're taking in calories from sugar, you're going to remain hungry and seek more food.

So much more.
